FWIW, if you have a PP account, you can use PayPal tools to generate temporary single-use credit card numbers. These can be used online at vendors who don't accept PP as payment -- they're just like a credit card, but only they can only be used once.

Some credit card companies do this, too, but I don't have any of those credit cards. So I find this feature pretty handy.

Yeah I've been burned twice on the dispute settlement. Once the guy shipped a different product and PP said quality of the item was not their problem. Second time the guy did a partial ship and never refunded the difference. PP never listened to a word I said, just took the vendor's word for everything. Complete A-Holes. The moral is don't rely on their guarantee BS.

Fortunately these were small enough losses to not worry about. If/When the big one comes I will go to the CC and burn them.

Neither I nor my parents have one, but I don't buy off ebay or anything like that. If its not from a reputable dealer, I wanna see it in person before I give them my money.

I'm sure there is plenty of good stuff on ebay (in fact I've sold some stuff) but I don't wanna be screwed over trying to buy something)

My thought is why do I want to spread my credit card number around to numerous online vendors. Doesn't using Paypal avoid that? Hope we aren't making a big mistake!
That is exactly the benefit of PayPal. When you enter your CC number online, you have no idea what, if any security they have in place. Giving it out over the phone is worse - some guy scribbles it on a piece of paper and the what? Does he shred it or leave it laying around somewhere? You have no idea.

I've been accepting PayPal payments and buying through them for about 6 years. Most of the complaints about PayPal apply at least equally for Merchant Accounts (I have both) but PayPal opened up the world of online selling to millions of folks who could otherwise never accept a credit card payment. Most of the flack they receive is due to inexperienced people surprised to discover the world of charge backs and buyer/seller disputes.
