Before the printing press people had hand-written manuscripts. They were very expensive, printing press revolutionized the process. Now printed paper is slow and expensive way to distribute the information compared to electronic form. Internet is more efficient and faster in ditributing information. Even the same newspapers use Internet now. I receive New York Times and Wall Street Journal. I have a choice to subscribe to printed version only, online version only or both. Online version is cheaper than printed. Guess which one I use? At this moment the only value of printed version against Internet is that I can take the paper with me and read it on a train on my way to work. I-phone distribution takes away this advantage as well. Add the fact that I now work from home 60% of the time and don't take a train every day any more. Future for printed news looks very bleak.
I also know that colleges are trying to move away from printed textbooks and replace them with e-books. Sounds like printed media is becoming history in every respect, not just newspapers. Electronic media is doing the same to printing business that prining press did to a profession once called calligraphy

I have issues with any of the local media just regurgitating the AP wire, even for local stuff. Why do I need a paper or TV for that?

It's not just the local media. For instance, many times I will look up a story about a sporting event, only to find the exact same story on Yahoo Sports, ESPN.com, and any of a dozen or so other outlets. It's like only one person in the whole world was assigned to write news about the game. Infuriating...
