We will be going camping. I think this will be the first one where neither my brother nor my sister will be there (and they're both bummed about that).
Looks like sunny and mid 70's (lots better than the 97 with 50MPH wind crazyness we've had the last couple days). Hopefully we may nab a Walleye dinner.
We'll also visit Nikki's grandpa's grave as it's near the park and she likes to do so.
Growing up my grandfather was a grave digger (cemetary caretaker) among other things. I think this made some of the death stuff more of an every day deal for folks in my family... So going to the physical plot of land where a body is burried doesn't really do much for me, but it comforts Nik so no complaints from me.
That mindset also doesn't need to preclude including those who lost their lives in service from our thoughts and prayers, so they will be...Comment

First off, great post Sam, hopefully it will remind some folks about just what the day is all about.
As for myself, I'd love to go to Arlington and the Wall, but no money. So I'll just stay home and think about the guys I couldn't bring home with me. I miss those guys.

I was going to post the same sentiment as Sam. We forget that these military type "holidays" are to remember or celebrate those whom we take for granted the rest of the year. Monday is for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so I will take at least a moment to take in the magnitude of what that means.

Visiting Arlington and the Wall would be great. We might be able to do that later in the year, but for Memorial Day, it will be a cookout with the family. Then we'll probably go to the VFW to honor those who gave everything. They typically have something really nice.

I'm going to H e l l and back. H e l l Michigan that is. Going to an annual memorial weekend party at a friends house on a lake. Good fun. When it freezes over there in the winter you CAN skate across it.Comment

Today my wife and I are taking the 3 younger kids to Niagara Falls for an overnight stay at the Skyline Inn that's attached to the Fallsview Waterpark....should be a nice relaxing getaway with thousands of screaming adrenaline pumped kids packed inside a cavernous echoing indoor water park!
(Lord have mercy!
)
The Falls are always an impressive sight, and an awesome display of nature's power.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

Just picked up a couple of porterhouses the size of a school bus, laid in a case of my favorite brewski, pulled out a full bottle of Patron, changed the water in the spa, and have the big-screen ready to move out to the porch... Life is good, even though I can't really afford to live it exactly as I want to...Comment

Saturday: Wash the Miata, as a first step to getting it back on the road. It's so grungy right now I'd be embarrassed to take it to my mechanic for the work it needs. Also will spend some time on the computer, working on the design for my new shop building.
Sunday: Up early for Monaco, followed by Indy and then Charlotte. (I wish these were running in the reverse order, so my interest would increase rather than wane as the day wears on.)
Monday: Relax, reflect, maybe watch one or two of the many war movies that are bound to be on the tube. Sam's post about remembering the meaning of the day is spot-on.LarryComment

Not a holiday for me. More of a mourning day. I've been to the "Wall" several times. Spent time at Arlington Cemetery. This picture does me in.

Oh man... it's almost unbareable to look at that picture. So much sadness, so much sacrifice. I sorta feel ashamed to be breathing free air right now since I have never served in the military. Wow.Sam Conder

"Decoration Day" as my grandmother referred to it.
I lived in northern VA for a couple of years & visited Arlington a couple of times. One of the times I was there I heard the funeral cadence. A little while later, the funeral procession went by about 100 yards away. It makes the experience a little more real when you see that.Comment

It's almost a shame that some folks use only this day and a couple of others to remember the sacrifices made by those in the service of this country, in order that we may live as free people. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about it. I know most of the good people on this forum likewise do not take it for granted, and feel both proud and humble. Even though we may lead simple lives, the privilege to do so has come at a terrible price. The first glass I raise is always for the honored dead.Comment

The wife and I are leaving on a 7 day cruise tomorrow. We are both military (marine) brats and tend to reflect on this holiday about those who paid the ultimate price.--
