While people may debate the meaning and intent of the 2nd amendment it is only an interesting debate. In fact there are several debates being carried forward in the court system including Washington D.C.

But the final arbiter of such controversies has spoken, the Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. ___ (2008) is a landmark legal case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for private use. It was the first Supreme Court case in United States history to directly address whether the right to keep and bear arms is a right of individuals or a collective right that applies only to state-regulated militias.

On June 26, 2008, the Supreme Court affirmed the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Parker v. District of Columbia, 478 F.3d 370 (D.C. Cir. 2007).[1] The Court of Appeals had struck down provisions of the Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975 as unconstitutional, and determined that handguns are "Arms" that may not be banned by the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), also striking down the portion of the law that requires all firearms including rifles and shotguns be kept "unloaded and disassembled or bound by a trigger lock."

I am going to abstain from this debate as it's well-worn and predictable.

However, I would note that any panic buying that people are doing is based solely on rumor and innuendo and has no basis in fact. Just because it was on the internet doesn't mean it's true.

My advice is to stock up on Tamiflu and N95 masks. The guns will do you no good when you get the swine flu...

Well ya'll are welcome here, we have plenty of room, at least out west we do. In addition to the American revolution against England, decendents who moved to Texas overthrew their government two other times, first against Mexico in 1836, and again against the United States in 1861 (unsuccessful). I believe Texas did retain the right to revert to a Republic if necessary.

Not surprisingly gun ownership here is widespread. In addition to fighting invasion from foreign armies, in the past we have had to contend with Indians (Comanches mainly but also some Apaches), outlaws, and numerous border incursions. Most of those incidents were a century or more ago, however with all the Mexican drug killings occurring in the border towns and our country's army overseas, concern to be armed is increasing again.

Friends this forum is simply not the place to debate the meaning of the Second Amendment, gun control, or even pending legislation. As can be seen in this thread efforts to keep it non political have failed. Lets move on.

                Mark,

You're starting to turn into a real curmudgeon, I'd get that checked out really soon.

Some more thoughts on higher ammo taxes. If they can add 2400% more tax (from $1.98 to $24.95) to a 1lb. bag of tobacco they can sure as h*ll ad a 1$ per 20 bullets excise tax or more. Bullets and bullet making supplies are an item that is well within the governments constitutionally given power to add an EXCISE tax to and to as high an amount as they see fit.
When the tobacco taxes went up I thought the drinkers would be next but it seems as though they are now after the over weight people and gun owners.
                      Drinkers your next.
