I am getting the feeling that there is a very good reason that the device that I want to build is simply not available on the market, that it is

      1. made out of parts that consist of large quantities of unobtainium
      2. would be out there if it were possible using today's technology
      3. may be out there, but is well beyond my tolerance to pay for it
      4. would require EE skills and mathematical talent far beyond that which I posses.

oh well, should just stock up on AA NiMH

        Greetings!
As stated, if this is a learning experience, go with it. But if you just want the device, there is a small company (?) (individual?) who offers the parts, schematics, and even a complete kit to do pretty much what you're attempting...As long as *I* understand you correctly!

        Check out: http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/

I have no connection with this vendor. I *have* built the device, and it works pretty well. the only drawback I've found is that some USB devices (certain phones and and some palm pilots) simply won't charge from it. It seems they require software on the charging device, or a "hardware trigger", or some such.

        Hope this helps!

          Yup, I looked into this,

I do believe that I'll just stick with the energizer enrgi2go that I have for this thing, and keep buying pocket fulls of lithium cells when I have to spend a day in the kilt...

They don't have AC at the tents for the highland games, yet

Loring's solution (LM2950) is probably the best for you, but if you want to try more sophisticated designs which will allow Vin=Vout go to http://www.national.com/analog/power/ldo
Fill in the numbers. You may have to register (at no charge). Some solutions will have demo boards you can order. You can order part samples as well.
