    Amazing Live Search Cashback story

Ok, tell me if anyone else has had this happen to them. In October I ordered a laptop off e-bay for a Christmas gift. Long story short the laptop never came and I received a full refund from pay-pal. The purchase qualified for live search cashback of $172.50. Yesterday I receive an email from MSN saying my cashback was approved and would be in my pay-pal account in three days. I e-mail them back saying I should not recieve this as pay-pal had refunded the full amount. Today I received this e-mail:
    Hello,
I apologize for the confusion regarding this matter. If you were paid the $172.50 in your PayPal account, feel free to cash it and enjoy the money. I realize you were refunded the money for the purchase but due to complications on our end it is easier to pay you the cashback than to attempt to remove it from your account. Enjoy the money.

    Thank you,

    Jim

They said enjoy the money so that's what I plan on doing. Going to buy a new tool!!!

            Sorry.
My complaint has gone through three levels of "escalation" (their term, not mine) to this point. I think that just means it's been passed from monkey to flunky and back again. They keep coming back with the same answer: Buy more stuff. My account was at nearly $200 at one time, and I shouldn't have to buy "more stuff", things I neither want nor need, to get my cash back. My last response to them indicated that I was going to ask my attorney for an opinion whether their posture was legal or not, so we'll see what happens after they chew on that awhile. I don't see how they can give $172 that isn't owed, but hold back $3.75 that is...

Wow...that's great. I'm confused how a company can be so callous about giving away money, but "good on ya!".

BTW, $172 should be some nice blades if you don't already have them!

AHHHHHAHHH! Guess what came in my e-mail today... A politely-worded communique from yet another MS "escalation specialist", stating that they were issuing me a paper check for my contested $3.75... I guess that goes to show how "reasonable" a company can suddenly become, once they hear that magic word: "attorney"... Case closed.

Yeah, you tell 'em you're going to get your attorney after them for that three bucks, that'll get their attention:-)

It did. Didn't like being patronized. It's about the principle, not the zeros.

Makes me wonder about the moral issue presented. I'm no goody goody, but if it ain't mine, or I don't deserve it, I don't take it. I run into this happening at the most meager instances, like a grocery store for instance. Some cashier gives me too much change or charges me a lower price by mistake. I don't say to myself "Wow, I just beat the establishment once again." Instead, I'll point out the error, and by that, just maybe, that person may say that there is some decency left in this world.

I have pride in my honor, and seem to live better with myself because of it.

I did try and return it. I emailed them and they said to keep it. What more can I do? I too never keep extra money when someone gives me the wrong change. I have been a cashier and know what its like.

If you point out the error, and are nonetheless told to keep the cash, then no harm, no foul. It's not like you have to give it to the nearest nun... This just kinda makes up for some of those times you've come up on the short end.

If it bothers you to keep it, send it to your favoite charity.

                            Or send it to Sam!

If they told him to keep it doesn't it mean it belongs to him?
