What do you do to "rest".

WHAT do you like to do to REALLY "rest"?

Because of 24 straight days of work without a break, a supervisor advised me to "cancel everything and get away". For me - I hate "getting away from home" and would rather work "than leave home to rest". I prefer to stay home, sit, read, check email, catch up on past news etc. When the "very tiredness" is gone, then I like to get into my shop. But I hate having to "leave home" to get a rest!

For the past 24 days (most of the time with LOML), I have had 10 to 16 hour days.

Different levels of supervisors, co-workers from other areas of Japan coming for a visit (watching my work), conferences, meetings, travels to Tokyo and Osaka, and in between our daughter and grand daughter came. We hauled them around with us and had a couple of half days with them during all of the work. LOML had a little more time with our daughter and grand daughter. (On one of the half days - we spent at Tokyo Disneyland. )

Today is the first day with no meetings or schedules in 24 days. (I did have one today, but I cancelled it - or rather said I will not be there.)

The supervisor said - "get away" - but to me, that is as much work as real work. I like to "crash" in my easy chair for several hours or all day (and I am not addicted to the TV either.)

SO - WHAT do you like to do to REALLY "rest"?

    Hank,

I love to travel. But, I have never considered it rest. I love to read paperback novels. I devour the new books rack at the store. So, if I can sit in my comfortable chair and read...without guilt. That is a rest.

When I am in a trial, I often retreat to my shop, and do a simple task. I like to pace back and forth and sand something. It is very Zen for me, and helps me clear my head.

A couple of times a year, we have a pajama day. There are no rules beyond basic safety, and it is thus named because you don't need to get dressed.

For me, I make a pot of coffee, read, watch HGTV, take a nap, putter in the garage if I feel like it etc. Food is just found in the fridge and I don't go to the effort to make a sandwich. Cold sliced ham eaten without utensils and fruit is generally the diet of the day.

For R&R, I'll go to the poker room, get into my book collection, take a boat ride, or turn some pens in the shop...

When I need to rest, I just sit back with some soft music, usually soft jazz. Not the kind I'm listening to tonight.

Read this forum, write an article, do something in the shop, watch the History or Discovery channels, go flying, read a book.

Resting for me means turning off my brain. Usually tough to do, though my wife would disagree.

LOML used to say that I need to turn my brain off, but now (with age) she occasionally reminds me that I need to turn it "Back On". I kinda agree.

It is good to see that I am not the only one that thinks that "getting out or away" is not always "restful".

Add me to the list of those who don't like to get away. My family has given up trying to find a vacation trip I like, because I like to stay home if I'm not working. (A "pajama day" sounds pretty awesome to me!) "I'm just here to be with you" is my vacation refrain.

My version of getting away is either playing Hearts of Iron 2 or reading. I keep several books in process at a time so I can pick a suitable one; right now it's The Dose Makes The Poison, The Blessing, a collection of Richard Brautigan stories, and City of God (that one's a recording from librivox.org, and very good).
Don't just say no to kickback.

I love to travel and go places. That is not rest, to me rest is sittling in my recliner, reading watching or having the TV on to Discovery, History, Military or now the Smithsonian channel. Being in Pajamas/sweatpants and shirt is the way to dress. Eating whatever is in the fridge with out making anything is good too. Now that I am retired the same holds true but now it has become more of a neccesity and the old bones and muscles let me know to take a rest. I like to stay active both physically and mentally but now I rest a little more often than 10 years ago. Just got back from 4 days in Seattle for our 43 anniversary and walking the hill took alot out of me so the past few day there has been more resting. Memo to Self. before going back to Seattle get the h in shape.

I've got a deck 3 feet deep in snow that needs shoveling. Great exercise, especially since we're at 6,000 feet

Sleep. When I was working two jobs, 7 days a week, 362 days a year (three days off, EACH year, three years straight), no real time to unwind. Just try to get rested up for the next (average 13 hour) day.

The things I would have done to unwind, I was getting paid to do, so they didn't seem as fun. It is weird, but even in this economy, I keep getting approached by various people for things, and I could work 24/7.

On those 3 days (Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas), I basically veged in front of the tv or pc.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I like to get away. I am just a couple of hours away from Branson, so we like to go catch a show, and stay over to do a little shopping. It clears my mind to get away for a while.

I am also close to KC, so we can also go there hit a few stores, like Woodcraft, and sometimes stop in at a Casino. We liked to go to the dog races there, but the track closed.

I do like to get back from the trip early enough to park in my recliner for awhile.

I get 4 days a year to be away from all of my responsibilities.

I go to the grandfather mountain highland games, just up the hill from Linville NC, I run the clan gunn tent, and socialize

It's hard work, but it's at my pace, and for my own reasons.

Up there, I'm not an active duty daddy, full time husband, or a corporate drone...

I get to unwind, and not work on any honey-do list, or listen to the children battle for supremecy...

I get to relax, and I really cherish those times

When I was in the Silicon Valley rat race, "rest" was at Napili Bay in Maui, for at least a week, in September or October when the crowds are gone, in a lounge chair on the lawn with a good novel and a gin and tonic and plenty of sun screen. Even then I'd get a call about some issue stateside but it almost didn't matter.

(Never did this until I remarried and the new LOML insisted.)
