    Did You Change Your Gripes?

What I meant to say is grips...firearm grips. I've changed a few of my handgun grips to Pachmayr. I like the way they look and feel. Some guys like to keep their grips original. What's your preference? Here's my model 15 Dan Wesson.

On newer firearms, I like the

Pachmayr grips because the feel is good for control. But on my old Navy .44 cap and ball, well, had to stay with the original grips. If I were to use the .44 for hunting, I'd have to put the Pachmayr grips on it for, again, control. Looks are ok, but I prefer the stability of those grips for accurate shooting. Ahh, I'm just ramblin now.

Yup, put a set of Pach's on a Blackhawk .41Rem mag. Once upon a time I traded a Redhawk in .44 Mag for a BHP that had Pach's. For auto pistol I prefer wood. So I made a set of stocks for the BHP; ha never do that again! Talk about a pita. If you have a BHP take the stocks off and look close, there's lots of careful fitting required. I've also made a couple of 1911 stock sets. The best was curly maple and were on a shooter that was stolen. I still have a .45 Colt Blackhawk that I will someday install a Bisley (sp?) conversion kit on and build a set of stocks with some highly figured walnut.

Pachmayr grips are ok for some things, Hogue are better IMHO but it's a personal thing. For all but the most punishing recoil I simply prefer the warmth of wood.

I got a whole drawer full of factory grips. That's one of the first things I ALWAYS change. I've never seen a set of standard factory grips that I was happy with yet.

Even the ones I used for cowboy action shooting, I inletted the actual head of a .45 colt cartridge case in the grip. One of the reasons was that I had a matched pair but the trigger pulls were slightly different and I wanted to be able to quickly identify which was which with out having to check serial numbers, so if I only used one, I used the one with the slightly "better" pull. By inletting the head of the case such that the case head faced into my palm, (opposite grip sides), I knew if I had the "right" or "left" hand gun.

'course, nuthin' beats blazin' away with a .45 in each hand, John Wayne style........

It is her spare. She has 3 other Perazzis. Since she is left handed she will loan it to other left handed shooters on occasion. Her question to the guys before she bringing it out of the case is "do you have big enough ba!!ss to shoot a girls gun". The response after seeing the gun is usually a mixed reaction.

Two years ago at the Grand American Trap shoot she had a malfunction shooting doubles. She took it to the Remington repair shop. She said, she could leave it over night for the repair. They took one look at the gun and politely said " Oh that won't be necessary we can fix yours RIGHT NOW". They pulled all four gunsmiths off of other job to turn around the repair on the spot.

As she was leaving, a younger girl grabed dad and said "Daddy I want a Barbie gun ke that for me.

This is the exact same reason I spray-paint all my theatre tools pink. Since I started doing that, the custodians haven't "borrowed" anything.

As for the grips, I'm more of a long gun plinker-type shooter. I have a beautiful Remington Model 12 pump-action .22 with the original walnut stock. I still shoot that baby from time to time, even though it's close to 70 years old. My 10/22 and Marlin bolt-action .22 WinMag still have the stock stocks, too. I just don't have the time or $$ to invest in lefty stocks for them. There are some shotguns I don't shoot because the comb on the stock is intended for a righty and I can't get a good head position without the comb biting my cheek.

The only handgun I own is a Colt New Frontier (/) .22 with the stock grips. All of them belonged to my father, who passed in June of 2001.

Funny story I don't think I've told before: I came home from college one day to find Dad in the back yard (our property bordered on a BIG farm with an earthen bluff between us--a perfect backstop) with the Marlin, which he'd just gotten back from being scoped, trigger pull adjusted, boresighted, and the stock modded to fit him better. Needless to say, he was pretty proud of his new toy. He was putting up some decent-sized groups, so I went in and grabbed the Model 12 (iron sights, antique stock), and squeezed off five shots as fast as I could pump the gun. You could cover the group with a dime! Ohhh, he was mad! Ranted for an hour about how I outshot him and his pretty new toy. I didn't tell him that I could never repeat that tight a group if I tried for a hundred years. Musta got lucky that day...

Someday I'll have to hang with you power-heads and see what real shooting's all about. I'll even supply the carbonated barley beverage afterward--not during!
