    I hate the internet

Am I the only one who is so tired of clicking a link for a news story hoping to read the story only to learn that it's a video? I don't want to watch videos of news stories, I want to read the story. In 5 years there will be no more text on the web, just video.

No video for me please. I go out of my way to avoid videos.
I am getting to be adept at avoiding links leading to videos.
I love news-sites that allow the option to 'read' even when there's video link available.

A written story has a fighting chance of presenting me with an in-depth analysis. A video tends to be a dumbed-down synopsis that tells me little I didn't already know.

Van Halen might well have summed up the need for videos replacing the written word................"Have you seen Juniors grades?.................

Generally speaking I would rather read an in-depth story than watch a sound bite video, but you have to remember that the Internet wasn't made for a bunch of Luddites. Gotta take the good (e-mail, BT3Central) with the bad.

On the other hand, I find the How To videos on sites like Fine Woodworking and the Wood Whisperer much more helpful than reading an article.

I too hate the news videos, for making me watch those adverts before and then waiting for it to load, and never having any significant in-depth info, I could have read 4 text stories.

OTOH, there's a lot of text stories just begging for a simple picture (or a web link in the case of stories about web or internet stuff) and they never have one.

I've mostly stopped looking at CNN.com because most of their headline stories now are video only links. A story I can read gives me a lot more information than a 2 minute video does.

Not if it is the 2 paragraph associated press feed.

Text > Video for news any day of the week.

I can read MUCH faster than the reporter can speak, then add in the delays for watching the musical logo lead-in, the commercial, and often buffering time (even though my connection has 50x the bandwith of the clip in question) and it's just a waste of time.

True. But more often than not in the 2 paragraph feed there are links to other things and/or links are included with the story. Neither of these happens with a video link.

and to add insult to injury, the video more likely than not has just those 2 paragraph press feed! so you end up going thru a video clip that you could have glossed over and tossed away in a 10th of the time!

Yet another issue, a lot of the videos, use proprietary formats. There isn't a current version of Flash for my main system, and I don't think flash was working on many 64 bit machines until recently. Not to mention I don't run Windows, so things like WMV and such are out.

Then we have the things like a local tv station that says visit our site to read the indepth story NOW, only to post it days later. (and bury it so it is a pita to find)

Just because people don't want it on paper, doesn't mean they don't want to read it!
