How to Waste 30 Minutes Fixing Breakfast

Tommy64 is gonna love this after yesterday's exchange...

Place bagel in toaster oven, select Bake, set timer for 11 minutes, return to office.

When timer sings, return to kitchen, open toaster oven door, carefully remove...COLD??? bagel? WTF? OK, maybe I forgot to set something correctly.

Close door, check that Bake is selected and temp is set, reset timer, return to office.

Ten minutes later, Ding! Back into the kitchen, prepare to remove...WTF, it's still cold? But wait, this thing worked just fine yesterday when I burned toast once and almost burned it again. Oh yeah, I unplugged something to vacuum the kitchen (LOML returns tomorrow). Plug in toaster oven, reset everything, return to office so I can compose this note.

At five minutes, check to be sure it's working (it is).

This toaster oven is almost as ancient as I am. The temperature control appears to be kaput and I was beginning to think we'd have to finally put it out of its misery. What threw me off was that the timer is mechanical and functions without power. But hey, how can you expect the heating part to work when it's not plugged in?

10 minutes to toast a bagel??? You either like hockey pucks or you need a new toaster.

We keep them in the fridge so they last longer. I like them hot (baked) but not toasted. Almost like eating them straight out of the oven, though not quite.

jack, i can only hope you do better with your take-off checklists than you do with the toaster.

I can think of several ways to waste 30 minutes in the morning.

But then I'd still have to get breakfast.

No BT3Central to distract me in the airplane

On several occasions I have run the take-off checklists, and then deciding I was too distracted to fly that day, taxied back to my parking spot.

LOML made bagels from scratch for the first time a couple of days ago. The absolute best bagels I have ever had (including NY delis).

Tell me more! Where did she find a recipe?

NY bagels are boiled first, then baked. I still haven't found anything like them anywhere. On the now rare occasions when I get back to NY, I buy a bunch and freeze them when I get home. Still pretty good when baked in a plugged in toaster oven.

My uncle claims there's something in the NY water supply that improves the flavor, but I'm not sure I believe him.

                  Jack,

The LA Times had a good article on bagels last November.

If you get into the SFV got to Western Bagel on Sepulveda Blvd. Hot and delicious 24 hours a day.

                    My mouth is watering!

There's a place about four miles away called Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels that makes a passable product. The ones I eat for breakfast come from Trader Joe's and are more like whole wheat bread in the shape of a donut. Convenient but not necessarily satisfying.
