    Hoist System

    Same new house, different problem. I figure there are plenty of people here who will have great ideas.

    Our new house has two semi-detached sections. My shop will be at the bottom of a 22x22 structure that has a garage above and a large room (aka "The Studio" or "the Junk Room") on top. A widow's walk wraps around the side of the living structure and part of the back of the shop/garage/studio structure (there's a common wall that's about 15 feet long). There are double doors in the back of the garage (total width 6') directly above matched double doors in the back of the shop so that I can move tools and materials from the garage to the shop using a hoist that will be attached to the ridge beam atop that structure. The edge of the widow's walk on the third level is aligned with the edge of the sets of double doors so that the hoist can also be used to move firewood from the ground level to the top level of the living structure, which is where the wood stove will be.

    My challenge is how to design the hoist system so that it's functional, won't allow the platform to make contact with the side of the structure, and won't be terribly ugly even though it's in back. One option is to set 4 vertical tracks in the concrete pad in back and have the hoist platform ride up and down in the tracks (with guide wheels on the edges of the platform so it slides well). It seems to be the most secure option but one drawback is that the tracks at the outer edge are inevitable going to get in the way of something. Another is to design a platform that looks like the frame of a hand truck (L-shaped when viewed from the side) with guide rollers on the vertical portion that would ride in garage door tracks affixed to the side of the house. I don't see why they would not be able to withstand the side loads since a garage door probably weighs at least 500 pounds fully assembled and the tracks have to carry all that weight.

    The platform will be a bit more than 6' wide and 3-4' deep, probably made of welded steel. Maximum payload on the platform would be limited to about 500 pounds though I would design it for a somewhat bigger load. That's enough to move a cabinet saw or a few sheets of plywood.

    Any other ideas would be welcome.

    If I read this right you are concerned with damage to the house, and the platform hanging up on the house. It seems to me that some nice rubber tires on the house side would solve that. You may wish to have the head block on a track so that it can be pulled out to the end and the platform does not hit the house and then pulled in and the platform can start to enter the doors making unloading easier. The other solution is to invest in a fork lift......

      I noticed a lot of hoist arrangements at the town of Meersburg, Germany, while on vacation this summer. Many of them seem to have incorporated the ability to move the block along the beam at the upper level, as suggested by Bill. Note the designs incorporating covers, too.



      Also, FWIW, HF has electric hoists in a variety of ratings. You might find these useful.

        Great advice on the tires. I don't think I want the block moving in and out even though the roof is strong enough to carry a tank in an earthquake (no kidding, either) because its one more thing to worry about breaking.

        Perhaps the thing to do is build wood tracks on the side of the house that the tires ride in. Gotta do some more thinking on this.

          Was the roof engineered with the thought of attaching a hoist to the ridge beam? Does the ridge beam already extend out far enough beyond the walk?

          If not, you really ought to consult an engineer. It's not just a 500 lbs load, you'll be introducing as a cantilevered condition. That type of live load on the end of a beam will bring a lot of other factors into play.

            The architect and the engineer who designed the house were aware of the hoist from Day 1. I was concerned about this also and it's specifically called out on the plans.

              Does this mean you won't have to worry about walking on the roof?

              I think I'd have a structure that rides on a rail system anchored to concrete footings rather than one that rides the building. I am having a hard time picturing one that rides tracks on the building where the rails don't interfere with loading/unloading or the doors.

                I-beam on end, box attached to trolley wrapped around I-beam, winch or rope pulley set up such as used on dumbwaiter or man lift in grain elevator.

                  Does anyone have personal experience with the HF electric hoists? This thing is going to be mounted outside and high up where I do not want to have to fiddle with it. Are they reliable enough for constant outdoor exposure?

                    I would NOT trust the lifting line to be rated to its rated capacity.

                      if the hoist platform is rigged to hoist levelly (e.g. a cage with a single eye hook in the top center or four corner eyes with a four-legged rig to put to one lift point) then you only need two vertical tracks against the house. make them so the guide wheel is trapped (and may turn either way) in the track so it stays a constant distance from the structure.

                        Look here for a hoist someone built for their second story shop. It folds back out of the way when it isn't in use. He has used it to lift some decent sized machines.
