Same new house, different problem. I figure there are plenty of people here who will have great ideas.
Our new house has two semi-detached sections. My shop will be at the bottom of a 22x22 structure that has a garage above and a large room (aka "The Studio" or "the Junk Room") on top. A widow's walk wraps around the side of the living structure and part of the back of the shop/garage/studio structure (there's a common wall that's about 15 feet long). There are double doors in the back of the garage (total width 6') directly above matched double doors in the back of the shop so that I can move tools and materials from the garage to the shop using a hoist that will be attached to the ridge beam atop that structure. The edge of the widow's walk on the third level is aligned with the edge of the sets of double doors so that the hoist can also be used to move firewood from the ground level to the top level of the living structure, which is where the wood stove will be.
My challenge is how to design the hoist system so that it's functional, won't allow the platform to make contact with the side of the structure, and won't be terribly ugly even though it's in back. One option is to set 4 vertical tracks in the concrete pad in back and have the hoist platform ride up and down in the tracks (with guide wheels on the edges of the platform so it slides well). It seems to be the most secure option but one drawback is that the tracks at the outer edge are inevitable going to get in the way of something. Another is to design a platform that looks like the frame of a hand truck (L-shaped when viewed from the side) with guide rollers on the vertical portion that would ride in garage door tracks affixed to the side of the house. I don't see why they would not be able to withstand the side loads since a garage door probably weighs at least 500 pounds fully assembled and the tracks have to carry all that weight.
The platform will be a bit more than 6' wide and 3-4' deep, probably made of welded steel. Maximum payload on the platform would be limited to about 500 pounds though I would design it for a somewhat bigger load. That's enough to move a cabinet saw or a few sheets of plywood.
Any other ideas would be welcome.
