    From the Department of Irony

Saw this sign in front of the cash register at a ginormous truck stop in Albert Lea, MN.

I guess we know how this guy really feels about his new system...

A product my company started shipping a few years ago did not have a serial port on it. There was a header (pinout) down on the system board but no external connector. A major customer put an external port in as a requirement for buying several thousand. Short term was a cable out to the front. Long term was to take the serial over the ethernet adapter. It was called Serial Over LAN. The guys who got it working were on my team then and called it SOL, because mostly, if you used it, you were.

Besides these meanings, it was also called "Sorry Old Lady".

We have an internally developed software application at my work called AFAS. My lead developer calls it "ehy-faze", I insist on calling it by the more normal, and humorous, name. Today it's a pretty good system, but when we launched it the name was very appropriate...

Every industry is notorious for them. I've run across documents in my field that are unreadable because they use so many acronyms, and sometimes they have several meanings to boot!

I learned a long time ago to always define an acronym the first time it's used in any document. Either the practice never caught on, fell out of favor, or people are getting sloppy. ("C" is always the right answer.)
