    Windows 7 OS

So the beta for Windows 7 (the new Windows operating system and the replacement for Vista) came out, and apparently it was a challenge to get because of demand. Vista (and its replacement) has come up several times here, so I thought I'd see if anyone here has an opinions on it.

    Has anyone tried it yet?

A friend of mine got his hands on it and wrote up some first impressions on one of my websites. Check it out here if you're interested: http://www.codecreations.com/site/bl...ndows-7-beta-1

I think I'll probably try it on a virtual machine next week and see how it goes... I'm sure someone at the office has put it on the network somewhere

I think I am gonna download it. I have my MSDN account so getting it should not be a problem. Now I just need a machine to run it on...

          Great!

I have it running on three machines, two desktops and a laptop. Dual boot on the desktops and VirtualBox on the laptop. It is GREAT! Fast as can be and drivers have not been a problem yet. Nvidia even has a Windows 7 driver posted on their site. I recommend it highly. I have been in IT since the first PC and I can say that this is the first sound OS from MS......SO FAR!

Maybe they should just repackage XP as the Vista replacement?
I currently use Vista on my laptop. It was a real pain when Vista first came out and broke just about every compatibility that could be broken. Hopefully OS 7 will play nice.

So, which version of Windows was shortest lived? Millenium or OS 7? I guess it's hard to say since Vista hasn't been officially dumped... yet.

I beta tested Vista, what a pain. I will probably try Windows 7, but I am in no hurry.

I'm running Windows 7 now, and it's very good. Extremely solid, painless upgrade from Vista. The new toolbar is nice, and they've done a much better job optimizing performance. As an example, when you open the start menu or right-click on something the options spring up immediately - no lag. Also, the user account control (the blank screen and hit continue button security thing) is pretty much completely gone. Highly recommended.

I would have said, the one I have heard Vista referred as, MS (Vista), BOB.

On a side note why do they call it Windows 7? By no means is this the 7th version.

Actually it is. After Windows 3.1 (and Windows NT 3.5, I think), they moved away from the version numbers -- perhaps for the same reason that Intel moved away from 286, 386, etc processors and went with "Pentium". (of course, that doesn't explain why they would have started using the year, so never mind... )

Windows 95 and 98 (and the infamous Windows ME) were actually internally part of the Windows 4.x family. Win2K and XP were part of the Windows 5.x family, and Vista is version 6.x.

Each major version number is a fundamental re-design.
