    Am I Wrong ???

Should I quit paying income taxes now, until I retire in 5 years??
According to the commercials for American Tax Relief, they could get my owed taxes reduced by 40% to 60%, thus adding to my dwindling retirement fund.
Am I missing something or what ?

But after you pay the 40% - 60%, do they let you out of prison then?

My mother-in-law is obsessive about avoiding (as opposed to evading) taxes, even though we keep telling her that if she's paying a lot in taxes, she's also doing well financially and her schemes for (legally) avoiding taxes often end up costing her money.

Tax evasion, which is what American Tax Relief sounds like, is against the law. If you get caught, you'll be whiling away part of your golden years in the pokey.

I don't like paying taxes just like I hate spending money on clothes, but both are necessities.

          two questions -
          1. do they do the jail time or do you?
          2. sounds like a great retirement plan, all room and board paid for by the federal government, after your initial funds run out..., few outside expenses

That link above (from consumer affairs) is extremely entertaining...in some ways...

I dunno about all of you, but I feel I have wasted my life away; with so many ...umm, how-can-i-put-it-nicely...'trusting souls' out there, i could have funded my own retirement plans nicely too.

The only problem would have been the small inability to sleep soundly at night...

This does point up one of the biggest frauds against taxpayers though. Virtually every municipality, city, state, and federal government, at one time or another, has a 'deal' for tax scofflaws.
Their take on it is 'better to get something rather than nothing'.
My take on it is 'how dare you reward those that didn't pay their taxes on time, and inevitably punish those of us who did by giving them this 'deal'.
To paraphrase Scrooge 'are there no prisons?'
Of course, that would end up costing us even more to support the prisons!

The honest guy or gal just can't win!

No, that would not be fair, men need to pitch in. Wives are supposed to buy tools, clothes you buy yourself.

My Sister-in-law does taxes for a living and I asked her about these (there are several) companies that advertise that they can "...reduce your taxes by (fill in the blank) amount..."
She said that what they don't tell you, either in the ads or when you pay them for reducing your taxes, is that any reduction in taxes owed is considered earned income, thus is taxable. So, you pay less this year, but pay more next year.
