LOL, that was a fast answer all the way from SW Asia.
Just was mulling over unfinished business from the year and that popped into my mind. No hurry

I've talked to 3 servicemen who have purchased (leased? not military owned at any rate) satellite connections for use in Afghanistan...
That's quite a difference from wars past where it could be weeks/months between letters or phone calls...
My little brother just spent another Christmas keeping the fine citizens of Iraq company. Thankfully, this year that was a much less dangerous prospect. Sounds like he'll be off to Afghanistan at some point next year, so I for one appreciate the improved communications...

i have a leased satellite connection to my system in Kazakhstan. Up until last june it was very spotty and ran on the Kazakh Kaz-Sat-1 satellite. Kazakhstan at one time had great aspirations to becoming a space power (because they inhereited the Russian launch facilities at Baikonur). In June, the satellite died (http://www.reuters.com/article/scien...27091320080616), they (the Kazak state communications co.) lost control of it and it spun uselessly off on its own. they then had to lease space on russian satellites to do the job. The Sat comms has been much more reliable since then. It takes 24-25 router hops to get to my system. Satellite delay accounts for over a second... the hops account for another .5 seconds or so. PING command usually times out with the normal default timeout which is 1500 ms.
I generally see 1.7 second IP PING response.
Since I use PCanywhere its a real bear. I wait 2 x 1.7 seconds to see the response to a mouse click. Typing? I type a couple of words into a text box and about 3 and a half seconds later I see the words appear on the screen. If you're going through a bunch of menus it takes forever. Try to drag a window around!Last edited by LCHIEN; 12-29-2008, 03:03 PM.
