    monarch of the sea

I'm in my stateroom about to depart on a four day cruise. It's 85 degrees warmer here than at home!

    Merry christmas to all.

Interesting! I just logged in after a 3 night cruise to the Bahamas - our first!

How do you get internet access within the stateroom? Higher priced than the one I saw, I guess ?

Have a blast. Did our first cruise in May and had a good time in spite of high seas. Enjoy!

I posted this thread from my iPhone prior to leaving port. I'm way too cheap to pay a buck a minute for internet access.

Weather for the cruise wasn't great, lots of wind and rain and they cancelled the stop at Cocoa Cay since we couldn't get in to the island because of rough seas. We hit NASA, Magic Kingdom, Epcot etc when we got back to Orlando and had great weather the whole time. It was 17 below when we left MN and 76 when we landed in Orlando. 93 degrees warmer.

                  Here's a couple of photos.

I remember spending some time at a cocktail party on the Monarch while I was working in St. Thomas. That was back in the days when she and her twin sister, the Sovereign, were the biggest cruisers afloat. That was a long time ago... God, I'm a geezer...

I must be a geezer, too, then! It was only the early 90's!

There's one other sister ship -- the Majesty of the Seas -- that followed the next year. I think NCL's Norway (the old SS France) was still officially the largest, though -- They added a couple of decks right before the Monarch was built. I have a lot of fond memories of the Norway, but she's pretty much gone now

If anyone else travels on these ships, then head straight up to the Viking Crown Lounge for sail-away. Great views from the top of the world -- I think Deck 14 on the Monarch/Sovereign/Majesty.

The worst was Carnival Cruise Lines. We were on a ship called the Ecstasy. I told LOML, we were lucky not to be on her sister ship.......the Agony.

ahh......the Viking Crown lounge. Been there a few times too! I love cruises. Very relaxing. Do what you want when you want how you want and still make it to the next destination.

I was there in '89... Yeah, there was controversy about the "biggest", because they measured using two different methods, one being physical size, and the other being gross tonnage. Norway was longer, and "the twins" were heavier. Norway drafted more, as she had to lay off the harbor at St. Thomas, and ferry people back and forth to the landing. I think they put Norway out to pasture six or seven years ago. Sovereign was sold, I understand, back in November, and renamed "MS Sovereign".

A few years ago, the Monarch came into our shipyard for massive steel renewal. About 380 tons of her bottom were ripped apart when she hit a reef. The Captain beached her to prevent a possible sinking. Emergency repairs were made in place and MASSIVE pumps were placed on board. She then sailed to Mobile, Al for drydocking and repair. After she was high and dry, a lot of the ship's company walked the dock looking at the damage. Most said if they had known just how badly she was hurt, they would nevered have sailed.

The repair was quite interesting and kept a lot of folks busy for about 1 1/2-2 months. We fabricated modules, cut the damaged steel away, inserted and welded out the new sections.

During my 30+ years in shipyards, I've only seen one ship with more bottom damage than the Monarch had and that one was scraped.
