Snow Day!!!!!

Best of all possible days--LOML and me at home because of no school, the boys at school

Not much snow, but ice and very, very cold...

Actually, I have over 200 papers to grade, so I have plenty to do today...

We had our snow day last week. But we're teetering close to the cutoff for school closings due to cold. Wind chill is supposed to bottom out around -25 deg here (at -35, they close the schools).

Why do you guys want to live where it's that cold? People complain about the summer heat/humidity here but I live in an area that has 3 colleges within 20 miles of each other, so it's not all bad.

When I was in Norway it was explained to me that the first big snowstorm of the years triggers a snow day. All the schools and a lot of biusinesses are closed.

BUT, this is not because they can't get around and function due to the snow. The Norwegians are used to and prepared for a lot of snow. It's so everyone can go out and enjoy the new snow, ski, skate, sled and play in the snow to their heart's content.

But it's a DRY cold! I don't suppose you have much ice fishing in North Carolina. Try driving your car out on the lake in January and see what happens.

When we lived in Fairbanks, and the kids were still little, school was considered "optional" when it got to -50 F.

Since we have lived in Anchorage, there have been no "cold" days, and only about one or two "snow days" per year. The "snow days" should really be considered "ice days", when they don't want the school buses competing on icy roads with the morning commute.

Right now, its a balmy +8 F.

LOML and I both teach in public schools; the boys go to parochial school. Our schools won't run busses in the subdivisions when there's too much ice in the morning for the reasons mentioned above. The boys' school runs no busses, therefore they can have school. Plus, their school is six miles east of my home--we were right on the line between plenty of ice and very little. They got the very little.

Doesn't make much sense, I know...

We don't need cars. We can fish year-round from boats. The way you are supposed to do it.
