Yes, Jimmy Carter was and is a good man, but he couldn't accomplish the things he set out to do while in office, because he could not get the support of even those Congressmen in his own party. The people elect the man, but it's the politician that has to do the job. Not a political statement, just a history lesson. I hope the new administration will fare better.

That cabinet Carter did a couple years ago was pretty sharp. Article

Thought I might get that in before Uncle gets this thread locked down

And here he is with one of his larger woodworking projects...

          (from http://www.habitat.org/jcwp/2007/ )

Thanks for the link, pelligrini -- He was featured in FWW a couple years ago, too. I'll have to see if I can dig that one up...

I think George Washington was the first President that worked in wood. I think cherry was his favorite!

Thank you, Nikki. I probably saw your thread right after you posted. I didn't reply at the time because I didn't want it to turn nasty. But the folks here seem to keep things pretty well under control. They can pat themselves on the back for that.

I hope things get turned around for the U.S. and the whole world very soon. There's a lot of work to be done, and we can't expect it to happen overnight. Thanks again for the congrats.

Seeing as how he is an Hawaiian guy I'm thinking grass skirts as official wear at state dinners. As for the woodwork.... bamboo?

Bill who lives closer to Hawaii than you do, not that it helps much...

                  Thanks Niki.

It is good to see democracy at work. And we're all with you in wanting the dollar to get stronger.

And now, back to the woodworking.

When I fill the gas tank or buy food I agree.

But I work for a company that is <shock> still manufacturing products in America, and we sell over half of our products internationally. The weak dollar these last years gave millions in tailwind and likely funded dozens of new jobs. With the strengthening of the dollar in the last 4-5 months we're looking at millions in headwinds and we've already had the meetings to pass on the message of cost containment, and frozen hiring...

So, I'm conflicted and I can look at the glass being half full/empty when the dollar is going up or down depending if I feel optimistic or pessimistic on a given day .

It is nice to see Democracy at work. It will be interesting the next 4 years. With our form of Government we have check and balances. The Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branches of Government. When those checks and balances don't work the citizens provide the checks and balance by changing the players. While some may not like the choices that were made last night, we will continue on as we have for 231 years. I hope things can get straightened out over the next few years. The new President has 100 days to get going and get his plan in motion before the bickering starts. We will know in two years when we have the mid term elections, if things aren't improving, heads will roll. The best thing about our form of government we can change without the military being involved, execpt as voters, like the rest of us. Our system must work pretty good, there are a lot of people trying to get in but not many wanting to leave.

That is one of the best patriotic sentiments I've heard in months and is something that supporters of both candidates should keep in mind for the next year. America is the land of opportunity. Give the elected leaders the chance. If they screw up, we are blessed with the means of giving other people a fresh opportunity in two years, even if we have to listen to months of political ads! At least they're somewhat less painful than a military coup.
