    Candy recall

In case you haven't heard, here's an e-mail I received:
    HALLOWEEN CANDY RECALLED
There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency....
Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant deaths in China . These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. please make sure to check your childrens halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT
THE PIRATE COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil) and please let other parents know about this!

You can verify this on snopes: http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp

Sigh. You know why the melamine is there? And apologies if I am repeating something I learned here, I can't remember where I read this but the quality controls in place check the levels of proteins in the milk and the melamine spoofs that and lets it pass inspections.

From what I have read China has laws that their milk must meet a certain protein level to be sold or they are fined. The Melamine is added to ensure it passes the test. Law of unintended consequences comes into play. I believe they are looking at changing the laws to do away with the fines.

the protein level tests were mandated to keep milk wholesalers from diluting the milk with water. Both that and adding melamine to boost protein I'm sure is against the law.

What they need to do is make breaking the law illegal.

Actually, the melamine additive would not be necessary for the milk product to pass the protein testing if the milk was not watered down to produce a higher yield. It's about greed, not QC.

EDIT: Sorry about the duplicity, Loring... We both put it up at the same time...
