Bill, On the Sunny Oregon Coast, where it's dear season
Uh, bowhunting is a completely different story. I have tags for 1 buck, 1 doe in my county, and I don't think there is ANYWHERE in Galveston County that will allow firearms hunting. I have heard of some of my neighbors that have taken some of the bucks from along the bayou in the neighborhood. Knowing those guys, It wouldn't suprise me at all... I know I have seen tree stands set up back there...

As an afterthought, I should have. It was his buddies that owned up to what they were up to and that he had no knowledge of it. Not such bad buddies after all. I am certain this was a one time thing for all involved.

It would be legal where I live to kill something or discharge a firearm. I am not in any city limits. However, common sense must prevail or else i could be charged with other crimes. I don't discharge weapons in the yard yet, but they do across the street in the pasture. They were bird hunting a couple days ago out there. Bird shot from a distance can still put an eye out.

As for deer, we get a few that pass through. Only evidence is tracks. I would not shoot them. I feel they are on neutral ground. Especially anywhere at night. That just ain't huntin.
Yeah, I agree. Shooting them from your back porch kind of takes the word sport right out of the equation.

Yeah, I agree. Bambi never gave me any s**t. I know there are a lot of hunters on this website, no offense intended, just the way I see it personally.

Either you are a hunter, or you aren't. It's kind of in the blood... I am an odd hunter in the fact that I don't like trophies. I am a meat hunter. I LOVE vennison, wild boar, quail, duck etc... Top that off with the fact that I donate at least 3/4 of my take to several friends that have children with severe food allergies. These children cannot eat any food that has been chemically processed. The ONLY meat they can eat is game meat. Possibly some free range cattle from CAREFULLY selected ranches...

Think of it this way, the do it yourself gene doesn't just apply to woodworking, but to getting your own food.

And yes, I HATE cleaning them. Dragging a deer isn't that big of a deal for me, but field dressing them is not my favorite thing. A friend of mine showed me some tricks to making it FAST, so I don't have to deal with it very long...

I'm not familiar with the laws in your state but here if you shoot a deer at night its illegal no matter who owns the land that it's shot on.

Oh, and I think crossbows are in the same category as firearms here. Compound bows, longbows, and others are categorized under archery.

The couple of occasions I've been hunting, either as an observer or as a participant, the things I remember and liked the best were a) being outside, and b) spotting and watching the critters. We had the antelope and caribou meat shipped back and ate all of it.

Last year while we were in Africa, I had the opportunity to shoot an old kudu that was going to die soon anyway. I didn't because I felt bad about simply collecting a trophy. Several months later we learned from the owners of the game ranch that it had starved to death. Probably better than being taken down by a cheetah, but in some respects I wonder if a quick death would have been more merciful.

I grew up hunting and fishing but after being a team leader on a Hunter-Killer team in VN with 75th Rangers I have no desire to hunt anymore. I have been deer hunting (years ago now) twice sent that time but I did not take a weapon with the exception of a .45 Auto not intended for deer.

I see tracking a deer to see how close you can get a sport.. but if I get that close I know I could make the kill. But I see absolutely no sport in that end of the issue at all. As far as shooting one from my front porch in the yard.. I might as well shoot my dog as he would have about the same sporting chance.

Perhaps if I could not afford food for my family but that's about the only scenario for "me" at this point. I am not condoning hunting.. just not my cup of tea anymore.
