The Fire is Back

Those of you that have been around a while will remember the pics I posted when the 2003 fire came up to the back of our house.

Well, it's back. So far it's to the north-east of us. Unfortunately the wind, Santa Ana variety, is blowing south-west.

These pics were taken an hour ago from my driveway. The first is to the south and the second is to the east.

Steve, I am speechless! Dunno what to say - that's one terrifying sight.

I am embarrassed to admit that before I your pics I never absorbed the reality of the danger of fire eating up your house. Now I can almost feel the helplessness of it...

I hope this one can be controlled and you and yours come out safe and unhurt.

What's the current position - do you anticipate evacuation?

Thankfully we've had a pretty mild Santa Ana season so far. The temps are mild, and there's even been a little bit of rain. I hope the wind storm passes quickly.

That looks way too close for my comfort. If you have to get to safer ground, don't wait until the last minute.

How could you possibly get any rest knowing that there are two large fires converging on you?

that sure is too close for comfort. i hope that it gets under control before it spreads any farther.

about 4 years ago, i was in san bernardino during the fires for the weekend and it was a different feeling with everything glowing around you, especially at night and ashes falling all around like snow.

Update

It looks like the fire is moving south, but 1/2 mile to the east of us. Unless the wind changes, it looks like we have dodged this bullet.

Before noon today, I was on the 118 freeway, that is now closed. The smoke got so thick that you couldn't see the car in front of you. The smoke was so thick that the air in my car was choking. People we driving holding cloth to their faces. It was very frightening.

Ouch, after having been through a couple of those in Oregon, and a Hurricane or two here, I am still undecided which is worse. I am leaning toward the fire being worse...

You can count on my families prayers during this time...

That's a bit too close to home...get the hoses ready. Kinda reminds me of white phosphorus.

Hope things turn out O.K. for you. Those fires sure are scary. The first pic looks like the smoke is fairly close to you, and close to ground level. How do people with respiratory problems handle all the smoke?

That fire was really bad in 2003. hopefully this one misses any structures

That is bad news. I hope they don't come any closer than they are.

We came through LA Saturday afternoon on our way back from Utah. At the time, I told my wife the Santa Ana winds would likely start up that night and the fire danger was very high. Sure enough, there were early reports of several fires by the time we landed in Northern California.

Those photos are making me wonder why on earth we want to build our retirement home in the middle of a forest!

Stay safe, and don't wait until the last minute to leave if things get worse.

So far this evening the winds are not too bad, although they are expected to pick up at any time. They are forecast to settle down after noon tomorrow. Hope springs eternal.

Steve, the news is covering only the LA County portion of the fires, with no mention of fires in Simi. How does it look there?
