Wood gloat becomes a wood doh!

There was a sawyer at our Ag Fair selling the demo wood he was cutting for
$1/bf. I came by this morning to pick up 110 bf of freshly cut white oak. I
still have to air dry it for a year but it's still 5 times cheaper than my local
lumber yard. That's about where the gloat ends.

Anyway, I was loading it into the back of my station wagon which is just a
little more than 8 ft long from back to the front windshield. I had more than
enough loaded up back there when I decided to shift the load to make room
for just a few more boards. I didn't realize a board was pressed against the
corner of the windshield when CRACK! Now I've got a spider web crack in
the corner of my windshield with one of the legs almost 12" long. Just plan
dumb. Major bummer.

I'm still psyched to have this wood but still feel like a major bonehead. Most
of it is QS with great ray fleck. It's going to become outdoor furniture. I just
need to go level some cinder blocks out back to dry it.

I really need to buy a trailer or a pickup.

I have also done this very same thing.

Don't beat yourself up... it could have just as easily been a rock from a truck.

We got lucky and had zero deductible glass coverage.

Just think, you saved enough on the oak to cover the deductible on the windshield!

I brought home a load of 2x in my Suburban, and when I hit the brakes a bunch of 2x12x12s slid into the windshield. It didn't break but probably should have. Probably didn't because I already have a great big crack in the windshield.

There's a thought: if you don't repair the glass, it will probably never get hit hard enough to break again...

A cracked windshield can become a ticket depending on your state laws. The crack can't be in a place that hinders the drivers view.

I was carrying a few steel fence posts in my car and had to stop quickly and they slid forward into the dash leaving gashes in it. This isn't the first time I have cause minor damage to my car carrying stuff, but I have just come to take it as the price you pay to haul stuff in your car. Yeah, a truck would be great for hauling things, but I LOVE driving the car I have and I just live with it and pay for delivery or rent a truck to haul things I can't handle in the car. Of course, I still get ****** off every time I do a little damage!

We've been using our cars as haulers for years. Now one has died and we're in the market for a new vehicle (stay tuned for the story). It'll be a truck, for as LOML says, "every boy needs a truck".

There is a good reason I put up with the high gas prices in order to drive a full size pickup truck.

Seriously, you should get your hands on a trailer that your wagon can handle...

That sucks. I bought one of those 4'X8' trailers from HF, just for hauling stuff like that. I don't need to get insurance on it, it doesn't burn gas, and it stores easily (folds up). One of the best investments I've made. Just before I bought it, I was considering a pickup. Glad I didn't go that route.

For what the windshield will cost you coulda had a HF trailer. Much easier to load and unload than feeding into a car.

Having been the major recipient in my childhood of having to ride in a large pickup camper (pickups do not seat 4 very comfortably) I can tell you I am well aware of flying objects in a moving vehicle. I have also seen the results of a not to well tied down load of steel bars on a semi-tractor. The driver was lucky to get away with only a few broken ribs.I have a 2005 Saturn Ion that I have loaded up a few times with 2x4's and the like. I give the vehicle ahead of me 3 or 4 car lengths and if some one cuts in I give them the same by slowing down. No broken glass so far and only one small scratch in the dashboard.

I cracked the windshield of my old 71 VW squareback doing the same thing. However State Farm had a $ zero deductible, so there was no extra cost to me (guess I've been paying the cost all along as part of my regular car insurance.) Check it out, you might be in luck.
