    Death of a Favorite Shirt

I just finnished the terrible duty of converting two of my favorite shirts into shop rags. The LOML walked into my office carrying the freshly laundered shirts. She stated these are now rags and ripped the side seams out of both of them.

I have to admit they were begining to be a little ratty, some paint and stain spots fuzzy material from sanding, and some thin areas from wear. I am sure she did not want me to go out in public wearing them. But IMHO they were not ready for the conversion.

So, at your house when do shirts get converted to rags?

Its always those long lived in shirts that are the most comfortable. When I am working in the shop on weekends and then we decide to go out for coffee LOML give me that look that says "you are not going out with me wearing THAT!"

She usually says "its about time you trashed this shirt" but as long as I only wear it in the garage then she doesnt mind too much.

She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I can't remember the last time I threw out a shirt... As they age, tear or stain, I simply move them down the hierarchical "depth chart"... I have categories for 1) new and gonna stay that way, 2) Sunday best, 3) everyday public wear, 4) only wear if nothing else is clean, 5) grunge work in public, and 6) working under the car.

I have a bunch of "T" shirts with really big holes and enough stains that they qualify for a test pattern. I can't throw them away because the holes in the front remind me of how close that router bit got to my skin, or the kickback that tried to take my shirt off.

As for the stains, I could just invite my clients in to sign off on their stains by marking their initials on what they find. Down in this neck of the woods, the holes add to exceptional "ventilation".

I'd like to add one more category -- "any of the above, and I need a rag"

I'm very sentimental about all my T-shirts. I probably have a 2 month supply
that I could rotate through without wearing the same one twice. Most of them
were free from vendors or given to me from people coming back from
              vacation.

That being said, it's a sad day when I have to retire a shirt. Usually that means
I don't wear it outside the house. I hold them in too high regard to make them
              into rags, though.

My t's don't often make it to the shop rag stage. If it's no longer any good for me to wear, it often gets cut into bedding for my daughters pet rats. Sometimes I get to sneak one down into the shop but only if I am putting on a finish.

I'm about like Uncle Cracker, the shirts move on down the chain. They usually don't have to be turned into rags because it'll just happen with time. I'll use them as rags when I pull them out of the washer or dryer and they don't resemble a shirt anymore.

I didn't see a category for me; when I'm done with a shirt it ain't fit for a rag!

How about: "When LOML quits ironing them?"

(I sure am glad the ladies here don't have LOML's email address!)

Pocket T/'s get recycled every 1 1/2 to 2 years. Most logo and other printed shirts only when they come out of the dryer in pieces. Exceptions are shirts like my bike shop shirt that sports 20 or so Pro dragracer autographs or the one signed by Hank Thompson. Those are keepers.

LOYL thinks most of my shirts should go go so I can't use that choice. There are a few that are in the "Don't even think of leaving the house in that!" category, but generally I'll only throw it away if the dog wouldn't use it to sleep on. So all my shirts are just fine.
