Computer pros - recording online stuff

NBC promises 2,200 hours of ONLINE coverage of the Olympics next month.

First, I don't know how this will be "broadcast."

Second, I'm sure a lot of it will be while I'm at work. especially the sports that never get on broadcast TV that I would like to see.

Question: assuming they publish a schedule (not available yet), is there a way to set up XP to record what I want online?

You need a tv tuner card for your PC and the associated s/w. Do you have cable or DTV?

i think he's asking how to record the on-line stuff, not the broadcast stuff.

I bet it means they'll record the events and catalog them online for viewing on demand. So if you want to watch, say, the women's 200m backstroke to root for Margaret Hoelzer, you can just look up that event later and watch it (after the requisite commercial, of course).

That would be my guess too.

I've done it for audio by simply piping the streaming output to a recording app, but that won't work for video.

P2P such as eMule or Bittorrent would probably be the easiest method, but I'm sure NBC will license the h@!$ out of the material. So there may be some legal issues.

I haven't tried it but I have heard than some DVR apps such as MythTV now have modules that allow internet streaming channels similar to over the air broadcasts. I don't know about the Windows side.

In the end I doubt they will just stream it live and not have the option to view past event's. It will probably be similar to what you would expect with Youtube.

There are some tools out there to capture video from the web (at least from sites like youtube and the like) to save a copy locally. I don't think that any of them will automatically recxord something. But I think that it probably be like others have said, you will be able to select what you'd like to watch on demand. Click on the event you would like to see, watch the commercial, than watch the event (probably with more commercials too)

I hope that is the case, and that they leave events posted fo a while, too.
