    It's obvious that when you hammer in the screw or bolt, you compress the wood fibers, which then swell and expand to fit the grooves. It would probably work better with certain types of screws and woods than others. Most modern screws are designed to cut it and create a channel. IMO you should generally use a tool or implement the way it's designed for best results. (Maybe I should copyright that remark??)

      Well, if the threads are small enough, like a machine screw, it would work because the ring shanked (is that the right name ) nails do hold a lot better.
