    New Purchase

Well, since most of my driving is to/from work and occasional errands, I decided that given the cost of gas and the poor mpg my truck gets in the city, I would get something that has a little better fuel mileage.

So, I scoured the web, the 'Bay, classifieds, etc. I was looking for a little gas scooter. Ya know, something that would do from 70 to 80 mpg.

Boss talked me into looking into something a "little more manly." So, earlier this week, I took a quick trip up to Atlanta and at the age of 34 3/4 years, I purchased my first motorcycle. I got a dark blue Honda Rebel 250.

I couldn't find a used one in Alabama. Had to look in Atlanta, and they were only listing 3 that I could find. The one I picked up is an '86 with 9300 on the odometer. Previous two owners have been women who got it to learn on.

SWMBO has gone ape over the thing. She is ready to buy herself a helmet, leathers, gloves...the whole nine yards. She thinks that next year I'll want a bigger bike and will give her this one. We'll see how it goes.

Right now, I'm still putting up and down the driveway. I'm practicing starting, stopping, slow speed turns, etc. The driveway has a slight slope, so I can somewhat simulate stopping on an incline, starting on an incline, etc.

After a couple months, I'm looking at enrolling in one of the safety courses offered locally. Already been getting a lot of advice from my boss and a friend here at the office. Both of these guys are riders.

Well, gotta go get the bugs outta the teeth.

Yeah, with $4.00 / gallon gas a regular sight these days, Motorbikes are selling like hotcakes.

I am not sure a Rebel 250 is exactly what I would call "Manly" though. Of course the smallest bike I have ridden was a CB750F Super Sport (Late 70's Honda).

Of course with Gas Prices the way they are...

That little Rebel might just look real attractive!

I've been considering one of those too for when the weather is okay at least. My commute is only 4 miles each way to the train, but parking is getting harder too and I'll bet the motorcycle would be easy to find space for.

Hey, I was looking at those little Chinese scooters off eBay. Compared to those, my son's 16" bicycle with a lawnmower engine would be more manly.

Seriously, I got this one for three reasons. First, it should get between 70-80 mpg and secondly, everyone I've talked to says it is a great starter bike to learn on. The third reason is resale value...if we decide we don't like it, I could resell it for what I've got in it. Heck the thing's blue book value is between $1,400 and $1,600. New one sells for $3,200. Not bad for a 22 y/o ride.

Rough math, it costs me approx. $4/day just to/from work (maybe slightly less). I drive around 11 miles to/from work. Considering if I have to stop and pick up the kids at the Y and traffic, I burn almost a gallon a day (truck is rated 15 city, 19 highway). So, in two weeks time, I've spent $40 in gas. With the Rebel, I can go almost two weeks on just $4. Granted, I can't pick up the kids at the Y, but is that necessarily a bad thing?

I remember when I was about 12 years old my father and many of his co-workers had scooters - Vespas, Lambrettas, Allstates and the like. We're talking about career military men shuttling around base on these little scooters. It was my first lesson in manliness.

Of course it is. Just not chest thumping, grunting, urinating to mark your territory "manly". It is: I want to save money, don't want to send money to the Middle East and I don't care what people think about my appearance manly.

You could still mark your territory...

I'm trying to convince LOML that I should ride a scooter to and from work, except when I have to haul tools.

You're talking about the difference between "macho" and "manly". Macho is about thumping your chest and marking your territory. Real men are at least willing to change dirty diapers.

Well, a gazillion years ago I had one of these - not this model of course, but I fondly recall that the left "bubble" had room for a rug I also fondly recall balmy summer nights on West Australian beaches

With Oz gas prices soaring (like yours), maybe it's time to "go back" - don't think I'll need the rug this time

Married men end up with the junker cars anyway (or tend to have nice cars and loads of debt).

As for not being manly and SWMBO wants it, let her drive, and you grab her high, could be fun
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

A few years back, my dad, who rides 365 days a year, threw a cam lobe through the cylinder wall on his 1500 Vulcan with 110K miles on it. 110K miles is a pretty good life for a bike and he was ready for something new, so he scraped it and went with a 550. I gave him a rash of crap about the puny thing...

He said it's more fun to ride...He's right.

I starting to look at bikes again. Love my Ram, but not at the pump! With a 50 mile round trip, I'm looking for a cruiser in the 750+ range.
