    Great Sportsmanship.

Alpha's post got me to thinking about things that have happened here in our little town that has made National news in the last week or so...

This is one of those stories that made me proud that there are still some people out there that care about others. A couple of young softball players here at our university helped a young woman who played for a school in Oregon go around the bases after she hit her first home run and then when she missed 1st base and went to turn to touch the base injured her knee. Here is the link to this story, and I read in our local paper that the girls will be on the "Ellen" show today I believe it is.

I hope this link works...if not go to kvnews.com and there is the link for it there.

Our local news did a big story on this here in Michigan. I believe the former assistant coach is now the head coach at one of the Colleges out here. He said that the program he left was 1st class and this is a sampling of what you get with them. bravo to those ATHLETES.

I think what the other team members did was great, BUT I have a major problems with this scenerio. A player is injured on the field and none of the referees, coaches or other Officials make an attempt to render aid?

My wife told me about this as she had seen it on Ellen, and I sat there fuming. I was a baseball player in my youth. In HS I blew my knee to the point of surgery and no more BB ever. When the accident happened, if you had told my coach that "don't touch him or you'll forfet" He would have said "F@$# the game". I had both coaches at my side in less than 2 seconds it seemed. Granted, when a player goes from a dead run, to stopped dead in less than a second you know something is wrong. But from what my wife told me, it was obvious the girl was hurt.

The officials of that game should all be fired.

              Mike,
There's more to it than an injury : the girl hit a home-run which may not have counted in any other way but this. She wanted the homerun, and the opposing team gave it to her, (and eliminated themselves). This link gives a lot more detail, and puts it in the right perspective - it was meant to be a minor but nice gesture from the opposing team.

Sorry, but I'll stick to my guns on this one. The Ump and coaches had no way of knowing how bad the injury was and should have come to her aid regardless of the effect on the game.

As I said, what the opposing players did was nice, but the officials need to be fired. All of them, coaches included. You simply can not stand there and have a meeting while you have a kid with a torn ACL (and could have been worse, I shattered my knee cap and had to have it surgically replaced) laying there.

What would they have done if the players hadn't done what they did? Huh? Make her drag herself around the bases, then render aid?

Sorry but one of the jobs the officials are there for is to make sure that injuries are treated immediately. They failed in one of their primary duties, to the sport, the team, and the participants. FIRE THEM.
