    Definition of a Veteran

Read this today and though it sums it up pretty well

"A Veteran-whether active duty, retired, national guard,or reserve-is someone who,at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The "United States of America", for an amount up to and including my life."

It doesn't get much clearer than that.

          Ballad of the Green Berets
          by SGT Barry Sadler

          Fighting soldiers from the sky,
Fearless men who jump and die.
Men who mean just what they say,
The brave men of The Green Beret.
          Silver wings upon their chests,
          These are men, America's best,
One hundred men we'll test today,
But only three win The Green Beret.

Trained to live off nature's land,
Trained in combat, hand to hand.
Men who fight by night and day,
Courage take from The Green Beret.

          Silver wings upon their chests,
          These are men, America's best,
One hundred men we'll test today,
But only three win The Green Beret.

Back at home a young wife waits,
Her Green Beret has met his fate.
He has died for those oppressed.
          Leaving her this last request.
Put silver wings on my son's chest,
Make him one of America's best,
He'll be a man they'll test one day,
Have him win The Green Beret.
          .

Too bad they don't make songs about the real heroes; the grunts in the mud , the swabbies months at sea and the mechanics that keep the airplanes flying.

Well, I agree in general... And props to all of the folks serving today and in years past.

However, with my brother and several other friends & relatives deployed at the moment I'm a bigger fan of

Some of us were dumb or willing enough to do this more than once.
I didn't give alot in the service of our country, but I certainly took alot out of the experience. One of the best decisions I've ever made. Twice.

Dad served in WWII. Every year he would go to the Legion on September 11, and stand for those who couldn't. Dad left us a while ago, so now I go and stand for him. I hope that when I can no longer do this, my daughters will stand for me.
