    Tracking Tools

This is really wishful thinking. Dustmight's thread about who was the tool owner made me think of how valuable a Tool Registry could be. Something like the VIN number for cars, having tools registered in a data base with their serial number and other info, like the owner, city, state, and the date.

Then, every time the tool is sold or possession is transferred, new info would be added. So, what would be available is a list of previous owners, dates, and locations. Not only could the tool be tracked for age and location, but stolen tools could be identified more easily.

I doubt that this could be ever implemented, but it does sound like a good idea. Would take a lot of guesswork out of CL, EBay, and other sales sites. Any thoughts on this?

also would be a bonanza for would be tool thieves.
They could take orders based on model and age, at half of retail, rather than just steal it and hope they could find someone to sell it to for five cents on the dollar.

Milwaukee has a tool registry online, of course it is only for their tools.

What Loring said. Any tool registry that is publicly accessible tells the thieves exactly where to go. Besides which I have a great example of why this won't work but won't mention it because then this thread would turn political.
