    Pet Peeve- Saw Names

I was looking around on Craigslist, and one of my tool pet peeves came up- people interchanging saw names/ brands/ types....

It seems the following names/ terms are used interchangeably...
    Skillsaw
    Sawzall
    Saber saw
    Jig Saw

I know there's more, but I can't think of any at the moment...

Too tired from (not) doing my taxes.

The one that gets me is that people on craigslist use "saber saw" to describe both jigsaws and reciprocating saws. All the rest bug me to some degree or another, but I get over it. But to me if you are going to say saber saw you should be talking about a jigsaw.

Now I remember that Skil made Skilsaws though now any circular saw is often called a Skilsaw. Milwaukee makes the Sawzall but I can't remember who branded Sabre Saw first. I remember a hand held saw much like a drywall saw being called a sabre saw and I would think that a power tool called a sabre saw would be a variation on a Sawzall. BUT. It seems that Jig Saw in now interchangeable with Sabre Saw. What really gets me is that Scroll Saws are often called Jig Saws. Then there were Scrolling Jig Saws, remember them?

Lets not even get into the ChopSaw, Power Miter Box, CMS. DCMS, SCMS business.

If you really want to rag on Craig's list people, how about the ones that don't seem to know where they live by the directions they give.

Bill on the Sunny Oregon Coast where a saw has a gas engine, a chain and cuts off body parts faster than any Skilsaw - Sawzall - Saber Saw or Jigsaw.

        How about Joiner vs. Jointer?

My Peeve: why can't people figure out the difference between a joiner and a jointer?

        Lowes doesn't know:

and HD doesn't know the difference either:

        No wonder people are confused.

...or a miter saw and a radial arm saw...

...and then there are those who think a "sawzall" is a "sawzaw"...

I have heard "scroll saw" used for jigsaw before.

I have a saw named Martha and another named George.

Now that's the way to name saws.

I have also seen jointers on craigslist labeled as planers now that you mention it. Another annoyance.

And yet, no one ever seems to price their SCMS as though it were a jigsaw...

In some cases, "generic" names are OK I think. Milwaukee broke new ground with their Sawzall. I have the Porter-Cable "Tiger Saw". But if I used that name, it would just confuse people. I could use "reciprocating saw", but that is hard to say and spell. To me, Sawzall works nicely - just like Xerox...

But - that is just for general conversation. If I were selling a copy machine on Craig's List, I wouldn't call it a Xerox unless that was the brand. Ditto for Sawzall...

So back to my original point, I just wish people were as prone to undervaluing their tools as they are to mis-naming them.

the local home depot had three 3'x4' signs selling "Rigid" tools right on top of the boxes that clearly stated "Ridgid" in large letters. I pointed it out to a clerk but you know how much the average HD employee cares. 2 weeks later they still had a sale on "Rigid".

Last summer I advertised a Craftsman circular saw with laser guide and included a photo.

I received an email from Anna asking if it was gas or electric!
You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

This isn't a pet peeve as much as just funny. My local Craigslist was selling a "radio arm saw". This is exactly the way it was spelled in the title and the ad. I guess he's selling it becasue it didn't get good reception.
