I finally settled on a good Dust Collector system that is very effective. But I also found that, as you alluded to - I get it on my hands and that often transfers to my face. It is not nearly as bad but dust from my hands do make its way to my face, nose, mouth or eyes. When I wipe my hands on a damp towel after each use, I have far less problems. Until recently, I was not aware of the amount of dust that transfers from hand to face so casually.

Right when you think you've got a successful respirator, at the end of the day, blow your nose and see if you got rid of enough composite to make a small piece of sheet goods.

I also found that removing the mask too soon because of discomfort was a habit. I hardly ever use particle board or MDF, but the same holds for real wood dust. That stuff can linger in the air for quite some time. One unconsciously touches their face, or eyes, or mouth, and the exposure becomes internal. Since my exposure is daily, I am an extreme example. Besides just that exposure, add the chemical exposure, and I'm surprised I'm still alive. I do have an irreversible dry hand skin problem, nerve damage and tendonitis in the hands and fingers, and am a bladder cancer survivor. I also have the onset of breathing problems. Oh, almost forgot... slight hearing loss (those darn routers).

If I remember right here in California the warning lables are place on or near the entry doors, state that some products in these stores contian substances the have been known to cause cancer. Just ask attorney James Sokolof, the guy who advertises on TV, he will tell you. When I work with MDF I use a resperator and with wood a dust mask. I have mild COPD and it doesn't take much to get the old lungs messed up.

I visited CA last year. thought it was kind of funny seeing that in a restaurant. but w/o indicating WHAT the product is, the signs are completely useless and serve no function. Unless to prohibit someone from suing.

On the actuall topic. I've had HD cut MDF sheets down for me. That was 1 years or so ago. Everytime I've bought MDF, I ask them to cut it so it isn't so dang heavy loading and moving it at home.

While buying fishing tackle for my 5 yr old, and trying to avoid lead, I saw the California label on a sinker made of solid brass. So solid brass is a known to be a carcinogen by the state of Cali

Unless the package specifically says "lead free" the brass has lead in it to improve machineability.

I'm surprised nobody has made the joke that these products only cause cancer in California.
We like to joke that only the state of California has figured out that they cause cancer.

My question is, do you leave the sticker on the MDF and it becomes part of whatever you make so people know that their cabinets, etc can cause cancer. LOL
