I think that I will stick with our single traffic light in the center of town and be happy with it -thank you very much!

OK, I'll admit I have never been outside of the US, so maybe I'm a little naive. Do other countries not use/believe in traffic lights/signals?? Is there some reason they don't use them? Some advantage to NOT using them at intersections like that?

On August 31, 1988, I lived about 3 miles from an expressway entrance in west Tokyo. I was supposed to pick up some friends at Tokyo's main international airport on the east side of Tokyo. It was 70 miles one way and all expressway. I left home at 12 noon. The friends arrived at 6:00 PM. I arrived at 7 PM. They were on the curb, waiting for me, so I did not have to park or wait. We arrived back home in west Tokyo at 11 PM (They lived a block from me.)

140 miles - 11 hours, all expressway; The plane took only 10 hours to fly from San Francisco to Tokyo!

              Ric,

Traffic circles can be pretty efficient at allowing traffic to keep moving. They're used a lot in Europe and once you get used to them (and driving on the other side in the UK), you can actually move faster than if there were lights everywhere.

Though not as obvious or as prevalent, there are similarly imaginative designs for certain highways in the air. Small airplanes departing John Wayne airport in Southern California are sent west to Long Beach, then east, then north before finally being directed to the Northwest. You read a map but there are no signs or roadways - the ultimate virtual highway.

Then there's traffic. The last three miles of a taxi ride into Kuala Lumpur after an all night flight took about two hours, or about twice as long as the first 40!

Have you seen this one? Poor quality, but you get the idea.

Quite a dance. I'd love to see that from above.

Not sure how, but this intersection seems to work fairly well!
