A willingness to risk something for something good,
for someone else's benefit with disregard for one's own safety and well being.

I'm sure those idiots had a willingness to risk something for something good ... their own, so "brave" may apply to them. If it's the use of the word "brave" that is of question, I think the real point is being missed. Is "bold" or "gutsy" better?
