    Help with tool purchase

I am thinking of purchasing a surface planer. I am looking at the DW735 Dewalt. What are the opinions here?

Also looking at a Craftsman 12" band saw. Also would like opinions from here.
I am new to this forum, however been woodworking all my life. ( 63 years young).
Thanks in advance for opinions ,help.
    Mike

Both of those tools are typically very well regarded. The DW735 tends to lead the pack of portable planers, though it's not cheap. For a bit less there are a few others I'd also consider...DW734, Delta 22-580, Delta TP400LS, Ridgid, Makita 2012...get the features you like and find a good deal.

I've owned the 22400 12" BS for ~ 15 months now and have been happy with it. The 22401 14" and Grizzly 0555 14" BS cost a little more, but are worth consideration too.

If memory serves the DW735 does not include the infeed/outfeed tables. You may need to figure that into the cost...

I have the Delta 22-580, and I am more than pleased with it. The two speeds and blade lock virtually eliminates snipe. I have planed curly maple, before I got my baby drum sander, damped down and on the bias with no chip-out. They are currently $429.00 with free shipping from Amazon. I paid $399.00 two or three years ago.

The Dewalt charges an additional $75.00 for the infeed and outfeed tables.

Dustmight listed all the ones I'd consider. I have a Dleta 22-560 (now the TP400LS) that works fine.

One thing to consider that I always mention in these discussions is to look at the weight of these things. My Delta weighs about 50-some pounds, about my limit, but some of the Dewalts weigh 80-90 some pounds... heavy may be good, but if its a portable planer, that much is not too good if it doesn't really add anything to the mix other than sheer weight.

Everything I've ever read on the DeWalt 735 suggests that it's the cream of the crop, the only real complaint about it being its price.

I own the same Delta 22-580 as Steve, and am equally pleased with its performance. I was actually all set to pull the trigger on the Makita 2012NB when Lowe's suddenly decided to have their now-famous blow-out on Delta tools and reduced the 22-580 to $229. That changed my mind right quick.

I would probably go with the Makita and then the Delta 22-580 which I sold recently to purchase a 20" planer.. With the hidden cost of the DW.. I'm not sure I would go there personally as I don't see the extra benefits derived from the additional cost. But.. that's just my opinion.

BTW Mike.. a surface planer is actually a jointer and the planer you seek is a thickness planer. Not a big deal, but if you ever get in a conversation with someone trained in WW other than from the U.S., they would have been making jointer reccomendations to you.

              Good luck in the chase...

I agree with the other esteemed posters. The DW is a nice machine but at a price that is usually over $500 thats a lot of cash and as mentioned before it doesnt have any in/out tables.

I have the rigid TP1300 and am very happy with it. Unless you only like to buy new then keeping an eye on CL in your area can yeild some real bargins. I got my TP that way. It was hardly used and came with 3 of the 4 spare blade sets that orginally shipped unused so it cant have been used a lot.

No sure where in pennsylvania you are but as an example in Philly there are quite a few available, even a DW735 for $400.

                  Thanks for the input guys.
I purchased the DW735. I lucked out, I checked the internet on Lowe's and they had it on special here in State College for $455.00. So I went to Sears and did a price match thing with them and they gave me the additional 10% and I also had another 10% coupon they sent me so I got it for $360.50. I also found the table extensions on Amazon for $44.50/set. so I feel like I made out ok. Also got the 12" Craftsman band saw since I had the 10% coupon.
I thank you all for your input. I value the comments in this forum.
