    I Finally Got It Last Night

    It's been about two months that I've been without it. I guess you don't miss certain things until you don't have them. It's like getting sick only makes you remember how good it was to be healthy.

    Anyway, My desktop has been at the hospital for about two months. Actually, the guy doing the work is an independent IT, that does both hardware and software. The initial problem was it not powering up. Yeah, it was a bad power supply. So, all these weeks I've been getting the array of stories from "They don't have it in stock", to "They sent me the wrong one".

    So, last night he called and said it was fixed and will bring it to the house. I've gotta say he did a great job. Not only did he install a new PS, but he put on some new software, upgraded our email, cleaned out some rubbish left over from a ME upgrade to XP. It works great.

    The kicker to this whole story is that yesterday, LOML's desktop took a dump. When turning it on, a CD drive would run and the system wouldn't boot. So, when my wife came home I had to give her the bad news. She hit the ceiling. The first thing she did was yell, scream, and swear at it. Then she went lookin' for the Sunday paper with all the ads. She was ready to just hotfoot it over to Best Buy right then and there.

    So, when the guy dropped off my desktop last night, I told him about my wife's problem. He had a pocket full of tools in addition to the plastic pocket protector full of pens. Took the side off and did some jiggling inside, and caramba!, the old babe booted.

    So, now we're as they say "status quo". Life is grand.

              I still think you are not way off - I think the title describes the aftermath - a sudden death of the desktop might have gone real south, but for CM tackling it so efficiently...

                          You're absolutely right about that. We didn't want LOML's computer to die because all our finances are on that one. She does have a HD back up, but it has been weeks since she's done it. Now she will do it nightly.

                              Something else to keep in mind. There is a little known but very powerful feature of WinXP in which you can create all or nearly all of one computer to another. And you don't have to use a bunch of cables or remove the drives. It is called 'files and settings transfer wizard'.
                              I have used it several times when I thought one of my computers was acting up to the point where it may die all together. Of course, like Lee suggested, I have a spare..actually 2 spares! :-)

                                  The back-up drive software should have an auto setting for as often as you would like to perform your back-ups.

                                  Now, this sounds even better. Where is that located - yes, I'm lazy and I'm at work so time is a squeeze.
                                  EDIT: I got over my laziness and found it in the HELP section of XP. Thanks for the heads-up!
