One of our three computers is a Gateway 200 ARC. It was bought in August 2003 for $1900. It has 40 GBHD, and XP Professional, and Office XP Professional. LOML bought this laptop taking college extension courses. I've been forced to use it because my HP desktop has been in the computer hospital since December.
It never got this much use, and I leave it plugged into the wall all the time. It also has a twin fan sub base (thin and loose) that we place underneath.
I've got no complaints about performance. It's pretty old, and just in the last day or so, the built in fan has had a whirring noise on and off. As I type this post it's quiet. Maybe the noise went bye bye for good. Mark my words...if it comes back, I'm breaking out the screwdrivers, and gonna take the back off.
My only words of advice is that LOML doesn't buy anything unless every bit of research has been done. She wouldn't have bought a Gateway, if there was a better deal at the time.
We've been talking about another laptop, because I'm getting to like a laptop. We have it on wireless, with DSL, and it's so easy to move around.
As for your deal, it looks like a winner. That's a BIG HD. LOML is sold on XP and is up in the air about buying another computer with Vista.

office depot had a similar deal a couple of weeks ago, a COmpaq with similar specs for $399 after rebate. The catch? order instore for home delivery for a mere $85 S&H charge plus tax. they told me Sunday morning when it went on sale.
I didn't buy it then because i was offended by the S&H. But it still seemed a good dela, but they were out of stock on Monday.
Two tablet PCs used in our office daily - all day - for the last 17 months without issue. The batteries are getting a little tired and need a little 'bump' charge after 3.5 hours. No complaints.
I bought a Gateway laptop nearly identical for my wife about 6 mo. ago. I think they are the best bang for the buck for a budget laptop. I/she has been very happy with hers. The glossy screen looks great!
Best buy also has some exclusive Gateway laptops with some good sale prices.

Thanks for the comments. i think, next time i wont take so much time when trying to make up my mind on the gateway. it was available when i saw the deal, but couldnt decide so i post here and before i know it, it was out of stock.
bob, you are correct, not to forget the xp upgarde. as for the vista thing, i have heard just too many people are not happy. so why are they continuing with it? dont you think that they would pull back and fix or make vista more user friendly/stable?
