    photo radar!!

dang it! just the other day i got served with a photo radar ticket that was taken on october 3rd!! it was for speeding "more than prudent speed". the traffic signal use to only take pictures of those crossing red lights, but those darn ****** city & greedy photo radar company now monitors speed through the intersection. this road has three lanes in each direction (excluding the left turn lane) and the speed use to be 40mph. according to the ticket, the limit is 35mph. i just went last night and checked the posted speed limit and it is posted at 35 for a two mile strip, after which they transition back to 40mph. my speed was 46mph!!! UGH!! now i am going to have to waste 5.5 hours this saturday morning and was $160 that i could have used towards a decent sliding miter saw or band saw!

Were you actually hand served or did it come in the mail?
If it came in the mail and you ignore it and don't get personally served for 120 days you've got it beat.
Just claim you never got it. If you can avoid the being served personally it gets dismissed without prejudice under AZ State Law.
I beat a red light ticket that way.

maxport, i never did get the tickets in the mail. our mail service sucks. the person who usually drops the mail shows up in their person car, no post office car. we are always every few weeks giving one another wrongly delivered mail.

so, the other night, the officer showed up at our house at 8:30pm. so i got served at the door, no way out.

like uc said, there has to be a way out.

If Mississippi were to do this I would never get a ticket. The last time I renewed my license, they would NOT let me include a P O Box in the address or in their records. Only problem is that the USPS system in my home town will NOT deliver to street addresses and will NOT place mail in a mail box without a box number on it. Return to sender!

So how is a person supposed to get a notice from the traffic bureau?

I don't know about speeding, but around here thay tried the red light cameras for a couple of months. Somebody fought it in court claiming it wasn't legal to ticket the car owner since the camera couldn't ID the driver. The cameras were scrapped and people who had already paid their tickets were able to get a refund.

What Bob said. The city of Greensboro here installed red light cameras a couple years ago and lost a lot of money on the deal. All folks had to do was claim they weren't the driver. The city tried to fight some of the tickets but realized it was costing them more to fight the tickets than they were getting in revenue, not to mention tying up the court's time.

I guess Greensboro didn't buy a very good system. My SO got nailed a couple of months ago by one of these red light photo systems here in CA, and she has no room for denial. There was a literal photo montage - in color - printed on the ticket showing: 1) (rear view - distant) She and another car approaching the intersection as the light turned red; 2) (rear view - distant) The other car stopped at the line and her in the middle of the intersection, with the red light clearly showing; 3) (rear view - close-up) a photo showing her tag, with the tag being easily readable; 4) (front view - close-up) a photo of my wife sitting in the driver's seat (it didn't help that she drives a convertible and had the top down - no denying it was her).

Result: $420 in expenses - $391 fine and $29 to apply to traffic school to see if she can get the points erased. I hope that at traffic school they drill into her head as much as I tried to what a STUPID move that was and how easily she could have gotten herself killed, T-boned by an oncoming vehicle - or killed someone else.

I love my wife, but was not too happy when I received the citation in the mail.

Texas is just now really getting into this photo business. There have been several challenges to the photo tickets in court, mostly on the basis that the photos don't ID the driver, only the car. The tickets they issue here aren't criminal tickets like speeding tickets, they are civil citations and thus are not subject to the same stringent requirements. Since they arent criminal citations, they dont go on your driving record either. The state also capped the amount the city could charge at $75.00 and half that money has to go back to the state to be used for various projects such as supporting ER trauma centers

heck in Houston the red light cameras seem to be a success with the city - they're putting in more. Someone tried to challenge it, went to a red light known to have a camera and ran said light, got a ticket... from a cop car that ahppened to be there. He tried again later and was given an automatic ticket which he tried to fight on the unlawful grounds... and lost.

Anyway, my friend got a caught recetly, he said as he drove through there were flashes going off right and left. A few days later he got a ticket in the mail along with a web address. Upn going to the web site he was greeted with a series of pictures of him in his car, his car, the license plate detail, the driver clearly visible, the car in the intersection with the red light, and a movie of him going through the red light... He just sent the money in.

Well, I'm not a big fan of enforcement cameras, but if you are admitting you were speeding, you won't get any sympathy from me.

In MN they had a court decision come down that the photo redlight tickets aren't allowed. I for think it's BS. Frankly, even though I know I speed, I think that the more they can crack down on speeders- and even more importantly people running reds- the better. So now the photo stands are still installed at several intersections, but they don't do anything.

I'd rather have police stopping the real crime. But I don't want traffic violations to go unchecked. I thought the cameras were a good solution. Too bad our system's nutty!

I heard of some of these even taking the picture of the passenger. Unfortuantely the driver's wife was not said passenger.

End results were much more that a traffic ticket!
