    Was There A...

Drive in restaurant where you grew up that had outside service, and waitresses on skates?

There was one near me called A & W, like the root beer. Was near two high schools. Had a drive around, and parking. Music played and the girls skated out to ya. Hung the trays on the doors. It was some hangout.

Didn't have one of those, but we used to have a Sambos, complete with the cartoon of sambo and the tiger running around a tree on the menu. I don't think anyone really thought of it as racial until they told us it was. Many a late night meal with a date did I eat there.

We had an A&W, a Frisch's, and a couple Steak and Shakes with curb service. The A&W had the skates, and the Frisch's tried it for a couple weeks once, but the Steak and Shakes never put 'em on wheels, to the best of my knowledge.

There was a Blue Top Drive In around here where the girls came out on skates, but I didn't hang out there. Art's Drive In was my hangout. No skates, but the chili 3 ways was unbeatable.

In the the upper midwest, we had A & W, Tastee Freez, and Frost-tops. Short skirts, hot weather, it was good to be young.

We still have an A&W here in SV. On the weekends in the summer it's poodle skirts and once in a while someone will wear skates. Several times a season they have car shows and quite often people will just show up in a hot rod, street tuner or a cool bike. Food is decent and the owners keep it repaired , neat and clean. It's closed for the season now or I would post a pic.

              We have a Sonic here.

Growing up we had an independent place that did curbside for a while. We'd go after baseball games and get ice cream. No skates though.

There were several in town when I was growing up. The one that was the favorite was one of the Pioneer restaurants. Most Friday and Saturday nights it was like a scene from "American Graffiti".

We have one A&W but it is a dive. Doesn't look like its been touched in 30 years.
Sonic does it at some locations, and we had a few mom and pops, that are no more (last famous one was Clem's and its brain sandwiches). Years ago, one DQ did it.

We had a Sambo's, and that was my favorite pancake place as a kid. I do remember the book as a relative had it when we were kids. Wouldn't be considered, politically correct, or kid friendly now. I do remember there were protests in front as a little kid. I looked it up a couple? of years ago, and there was only the original one left.

Two other favorites, were The Pop Shop (previously Polly's pop), bottle your own, and Golden Point, a cross between a diner, and a 1950's McDonald's.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

There are still a few Stewarts root beer places around NJ like that, minus the roller skates. They also have booths inside some now. Decent food, and cheap. But, not near where I live now.

A few years ago a new A&W opened up here with outside service (no roller skates), but they dropped the outside service within a year.

Yeah, we had an A&W in our hometown that delivered trays that hung on the window. I don't think they were on roller skates though. Last time I was through my old home town, the A&W was still there, but no drive-up service.

Seems most of those places have gone away along with drive-in theatres. Kind of strange...cars are more comfortable than ever. Not sure why the market for in car dining and movie watching went away.

Ahhh, drive in movies...brings back some juicy memories. Good thing though. I wouldn't want my kids to be subjected to an atmosphere as lurid as I had .
