    "Screwing" Your Boss

    Here's the short headline story:

“Employee took 1 million screws home from factory”
An assembly worker hid screws in a specially designed hiding place and took up to 7,000 home with him every day. Over a two-year period, he stole more than 1.1 million screws with an estimated value of $155,000. He allegedly sold the screws over the Internet at discount prices.

He probably bolted from work each day. Makes you wonder where that "special hiding place" was.

If he was, getting it out would be very messy. Not to mention painful.

That works out to being about $7 a screw ... what they heck were they made of? ... and how do you smuggle 7,000 a day out?

you've got your equation upside down, they are $.14 each. That is still expensive for a wholesale priced screw. unless they are mixing up screws and bolts.
something is screwy with this story.

They may be larger sized screws, or perhaps stainless steel or grade 5s.
Or, they may be bending statistics to make it sound worst case, like giving the lowes one-off retail price instead of the industrial wholesale price in 1000's, to make the charges for the crime higher.

You know, like the police say they siezed $2 million of marijuana but that's the price if it were rolled up into joints at $5 apiece....

I was wondering if he took orders for specialty screws and then went and stole the ones ordered or whether he just stole what they had lots of and then offered them for sale.

I do know a lot of places used to just have "open stock" on fasteners and
the employees took them as needed - that can save a lot of paperwork and inventorying but can also lead to abuses.
