A few years ago, LOML and I toured the Jack Danials Distillery in Lynchberg, Tn. What I saw there brought a tear to my wood workers eye. There was cord after cord after cord of maple stacked and waiting to be burned and turned into charcoal for filtering the distillate!

No - haven't heard of skinheads for years. As I recall, they were more prevalent in Sydney (rough & tough), than in Melbourne (all class!) .

Well, not to dispute Melbourne's obvious class, but I believe those boys were in fact based in Melbourne. The initial action took place at the Footscray Railway Station. There were another group of skinheads based in Canberra who paid a visit, and thing's went downhill from there. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romper_Stomper)

That movie was set in the 80's. Of course, we have had our own problems with neoNazis and the like, but not quite as distinctive as the skinheads in England and Europe. When I lived in Germany in the 90's occasionally the military would post a warning don't go to Hamburg or wherever because they're expecting a demonstration by skinheads and other extremist elements.

(As an aside I always wondered why neoNazis would shave their heads to look like concentration camp victims instead of wearing their hair slicked back like the Nazi hierarchy, but that's another story.)

If you like maple you would probably also like cherry. The texture is similar but cherry is slightly red (heartwood, sapwood is like maple) and turns darker red with exposure to sunlight. Both commonly have figure which makes them more difficult to work but also prettier.

Oak and maple are essentially the same price from my dealer. Cherry is even more than walnut. My dealer sorts out the figured stuff and them charges 3X or more for it. The dealer a couple hours away does not sort so if you get there when they put out a bunch of boards, you can get nice boards.

Can you get african wood cheaper? Wenge looks something like walnut. Paduck is interesting but unlike any American hardwood. Zebrawood (is that African?) is also unique.

Do they ship anything in wooden crates? If it comes from the U. S., it could be a cheap source of American hardwood.

The lumber yard guy said I could get 12 x 3' lengths from a "standard" rough cut length they had in stock.

Ah. that is 12 3' long pieces. Ok. I read it as 12" wide x 3' long.

I don't care much for the soft maple species. It is nice, but rather plain Jane. The hard maples are where you find small patches of birdseye and curls in ordinary lumber. If they know it's in there, they will likely charge more.

Birdseye is my favorite maple to use. Those eyes just pop out at you when finished.

The vast majority of curly maple is soft maple. As rare as curl is in soft maple, it is vastly more rare in hard maple. Curly hard maple also has a yellowish tint to it that some find to be unpleasant, especially if one is looking for pure white.

Birdseye figure can also be found in soft and hard maple. In the case of birdseye it tends to occur more in hard maple, though one can find it in soft maple, ash, walnut and imported mahogony. Birdsye mahogony is just crazy.

As you note both woods are not a lot of fun to work with. I spend hours just surfacing the wood. I can not count how many trips my curly maple took through the dual drum sander today. Then 120, 180, 220 ROS. But it is all worth it when you apply that first coat of finish and pop that curl.

I have found that there has been a huge supply of curly maple hitting the shelves lately. Pricing is real good right now and it is definately time to get a good stock pile of stash quality material.
