How about a car that runs on ..... AIR!

Compressed air that is. MDI has announced it's Air Car. Not yet available here, only in France and India in 2008. Prices there to range from $4800 - $12900. 2, 4, 6 cylinder models.

The first is the OneCat. 5 passengers. 500 miles on a "fill-up." Speed to 68 MPH. Plug it in and the on-board compressor refills the tank in 4 hours.

    I want one!

And, no, I wouldn't want to drive one in some areas of this country and risk a collision with big trucks, crazy drivers, etc. But for "around the town" it would be great!

Looks cool. I wonder if it will really be practical? And with some of the drivers we have around here I would not want to drive one.

We had long discussion about that on this forum in early July. I believe the consensus was that we couldn't see how it could give you the distance claimed on the quantity of air available.
You must have missed that discussion, Paul!

Had to search for it but you are right. A point missed in the prior discussion: The car has a built-in compressor that recharges the tank. Just takes electricity, not a compressor at a gas station.

actually I think the concern was that we couldn't figure out how they wer putting a compressor to reach the PSI/volume/time that they were claiming.

The only compressors that could reach the PSI that we know of are for things like Scuba gear, but they can't fill the needed volumn in nearly the timeframe they claim.

You guys are recylcing old news. we had this discussion in July about this car:

                http://www.bt3central.com/showthread...ht=air+car+MDI

Runs off of like 4200 PSI fully charged. You can compress air slowly with a relatively small compressor to "charge" up the tank in many hours or get a very big compressor to charge it in minutes. Of course the big compressor would have to be a special station that would charge you appropriately to offset the high cost of the compressor and the power used. I guess the air is technically still free.
