    toy RC helos

yeah I noticed that you can get these 5-6 inch long remote control (most appear to be infrared instead of radio) helicopters designed for indoor use.

They claim to have two channel control and trims...
can you actually fly in any reasonable fashion with this sparse control?

I wonder if the only controls are the speed of the main blade (lift) and tail rotor (R & L steering) but how do you control forward motion?

They only cost between $20 and $30.

bearing in mind its for amusment not serious flying, is this even worth attempting or is it impossible to master?

One drawback is they use a lightweight battery in the chopper you charge from the controller, it takes a 20-min charge to fly about 5-10 minutes.

    Larry?

Theres more on teh web if you look under micro helicopters or micro flyer

    190 more on eBay

ha, i notice brookstone has a $6 2-year replacement policy... covers normal mechanical wear and tear - i would think for a remote-controlled helo crashing is normal wear and tear...

Do I want to ask one of santa's elves for one of these? (I think I do)

There is a member here that uses the more expensive one and is much more serious about the hobby.

I bought the V3 version of this helicopter It took me about 2 hrs and $20 worth of blades to become proficient. Once it is trimmed, it can "hands-off" hover inside where there is no wind. I would recommend this or similar coaxial (no tail rotor) helo to start.

I tried a mini one like you were talking about before but I didn't know what I was doing so I can't tell you if it is worth it or not. I'm sure lrogers has flown the little guy.

I just came back from the monthly computer swap meet today and guess what I saw there. They were selling for $25 and the kid in me just had to buy one. I'll let you know how it goes. The guy had some nicer ones with gyros he was selling for $150 and $190.

I have tried several of those and was VERY disappointed. The ads you see on TV of these doing real, controlled flight is total BS. They are fun for messing with the cat, but that's about all. About the only "cheap" (relative term) helo I'd ever recommend is the Blade CX, Co-axial. It is very stable and you and actually control it. It's even more fun to mess with the cat! It's still not cheap at about $189, but at least it will due what it's advertized to do.

Just back home from the filed and after waiting out the wind, got to fly the Hawk, the Freya and the scale H500D. I had a blast today!

I tried the one I got today (similar if not the same as Lorings pic) and I have to agree it is pretty hard to control. The tail keeps spinning by itself. There's a pot that you're supposed to use to offset it but I could never to get it to work right. I figured it was just me.

I know a guy who has the little indoor one. He likes it. As was mentioned he teases the cat and the dog. He lands it on the ceiling fan and them dive bomb 'em.

they are pretty cool. The 2 channel ones can only go up/down and turn, you add weights to the nose so it is always going forward or backwards. If you really want control over forwards or backward, I would recommend something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Alany-80710-Al...3633292&sr=8-2
