I ran across their ad in PC World selling laser pointers, and in the ad they carry for sale to the public, pointers that can pop baloons, light cigarettes, light matches, and burn through cardboard. I couldn't believe it. Here's the site, and there is a video link.

Heck, even a lot of the the cheapie ones can be modified to do a lot of those tricks by toasting a resistor or other minor mods to up their output or so I've read.

For real personal protection you need one of those 747 mounted jobbies the DoD is working on for your house and maybe a slightly smaller version for your automobile.

I'm thinkin' worse. How about kids getting hold of these things. As of now they're not considered a weapon. They can carry these things easily.

I always wanted a higher power laser... my application was to have a two stage pushbutton (like the digital cameras for focusing/setting exposure, then taking the ppicture) on the laser pointer.

The first levelk would be to aim the laser at a cockroach on the wall, the second position would fry him dead on the spot, dropping him cleanly and neatly to the floor.

My friend proposed a three-stage switch... stage 1: Aim, Stage 2: Stun (you know like Star Trek "set phasers to stun"), and stage 3: vaporize, leave no body.
