Why are squirrels licking my patio ?

Squirrels often lick the concrete when we're not outside. Anyone know why?

Now THAT is a funny topic.

Maybe efflorescence? Does that happen with concrete?

I thought efflorescence only occurred as concrete cured, and this house is 20+ years old. Yes? No?

If no that might explain it!!!!!

I thought I was the only one who'd seen this happen. Except for me, the
squirrel was licking some 10 year old pressure treated decking on my porch.
          No idea why.

Maybe its like horses eating wooden posts or fencing. There might be something in the wood that he needs or something that is on the concrete.

Maybe somebody dropped some beer and it soaked in and the little critter is trying to have a drink before he grabs his nuts and runs.

Do these little fellers have to grind down their teeth like rabbits do?

The picture doesn't show the squirrel spit on the patio!

I would figure the squirrel is either after the salt, or he's licking up any moisture that he can find, perhaps from the morning dew.

We have several squirrels that we feed quite regularly and I've learned to also put out water for them. The water was my wife's idea, as I have to admit I hadn't given that much thought. It's been a very dry summer here and the squirrels have been drinking the water quite regularly. I've got three "dishes" which are actually the bottom inch or so of 16-ounce water bottles. Those get filled at least twice a day. I've seen the squirrels ignore the corn or seed, and just stop by for a drink.
