    On the money from Dilbert

    This one gets me:

My wife is always handing me the remote or the cell phone and saying it doesn't work.

It always works fine, it's just be sent off to never-never land by pushing wrong buttons. Like she'll select push the button that makes the remote control the DVD and she'll be trying to change channels, or she'll say that the sound is broken and she'll have switchted the MTS option to alternate sound track and there is none. I'll say you have to be careful not to push buttons you don't what they do and she'll angrily reply she didn't do that. but there's only me and her and I don't watch much tv and I know I didn't pouch that button... or the cell phoine will be in some weird setup mode.
She refuses to wear her reading glasses so I know she can't read the button labels. Just drives me bonkers and she won't even admit she did anything wrong.

LOML is the same. I have a very simple one-unit does it all universal remote. Couldn't be simpler. But no matter what she wants to do, I turn it on for her.

At least the cell phone she has is no problem!

But our new Panasonic home phone set? WAY too many menus!

      LOL

I got told I was going to go tv shopping for work. I think I watch it there more then at home (after work, Friday night, Dr Who). They said the color went out.

Now I grew up with tube tv's and I know, nowdays, color just doesn't go out. I messed with the remote a few minutes and hit restore settings, and everything was back to factory.

Then I thought, I coulda had a free tv.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Good man, your wife must have taught you well And I won't start a debate over who is right or wrong in our house because I always lose those battles.

Maybe I'm just stupid but I 'trained' my wife to admit that I'm right (when I am right) from the start of our relationship.

Ok, maybe I admit it for her (hence the previously mentioned stupidity).

That cartoon describes my relationship with my wife, who is very competitive and hates to be wrong. She is a very smart lady, with degrees in chemistry, business and computer science. It's the last one that's often a source of amusement because while she's great (or at least used to be) at writing obscure code for obscure computer parts, she's challenged when it comes to troubleshooting basic problems with her PC.

slippery slope is right, as scott says. but my hope is she never reads this, so my one (and only) chance to vent a bit :

                    - tv setup is a bit complicated at our place : inputs from dvd / vcr / tivo / dish / cable, controlled by a multi-switch from radio-shack, and judicious use of the 'device input' button on the remote. i am ready to allow for some extra time to learn about it; like months, maybe; but it's been years now, my then-4-year-old has turned 8, and has fully learnt all the intricacies, and now the 5 year old is able to tell her mom what she's doing wrong. but even now when she gets it wrong (and the fuzzy snow shows up on the screen), she gets upset with me : "this tv is gonna be the death of me; i dunno why our home is the only place with such complicated setup, i never see any of our friends struggle with it..." umm, maybe they 'got' it faster... ?

                    - I have installed a software 'noscript' on our browser(s), which stop javascript by default on any website but with a message; if you want, you just click on it and 'allow scripts'. Simple. I'd think, particularly for a person who has a masters in comp-science (and that's not me in our family ), but i get called every so often for 'this stupid browser is not working again; why can't we have an simple thing running in this house?'.

                    - the new (ie, a year old) vacuum cleaner has two settings : "floor" and "hose". self explanatory, i'd think. sometime ago she told me it stopped working, it did not clean at all. i did not get to check it for a week, and by then she had declared that "next time on, I will go a buy such stuff. you never check things right at the store, (and so on)". but of course when i checked it and saw the knob had been on "hose", the fault was also mine, because "who else would have turned it?".

you know what, i got other stuff to do, this list could just keep growing...

but it has made me ponder, while i talk about all this affectionately and have never been upset with her for not 'getting' things, if things were otherwise between us we would be having slanging matches all the time . but we have been married only 14 years, so it's a love-match still...

After 42 wonderful years, my standard answer is now "yes dear, you're right", and I go about doing it the way I was doing it in the first place. Most of the time I'm doing it fine my way, but it really hurts when she is right!!

We have our occassional issues as well but our mutual goofiness is with directions. We are both dunderheads with it and sometimes find ourselves reading a sign and going, "Duh". Then, we pull of the road, laughing until it hurts and pull out a map to see how to get back to the correct road. After 33 years she's still my best friend... even when she can't get the remote to work. I figure that life's too short to get too upset about the little irritations.
                        Blessings,
                        Chiz
