How much do I pay a babysitter?

We talked to a girl down the street about playing with and reading to our 3-year-old boy in Spanish (the girl is bilingual) so that he might have some exposure to the language. We were a little surprised at the rate she came back with compared to what we paid a different sitter last year. So I wonder if we were underpaying last year's, overpaying this year's, or somewhere in between...

We ask the girls to watch & play with our son for 1-2 hours a week in and around our home while my wife is still in the home getting stuff done and having quality time with our younger child.

Last year's sitter was 15 years old with "professional" experience and several references. She was also certified in infant/child CPR.

This year's sitter is 11 years old with no professional experience or references (although she has watched her 4-year-old brother before) and no certifications. She is willing to read/play with our son in Spanish.

What do you all think is a fair rate? What do you pay your sitters?

As always, any input or advice will be very much appreciated!

The sitter who watches our kids in the morning until my wife gets home gets 10 bucks an hr for 2 kids. She does it part time for the extra money. I have enough family in the area that the few times we've gone to dinner/movie etc. we don't have to pay for it.

How old were the kids you hired? Do you know their experience levels or certifications?

we pay $9 per hr for two kids (1 & 3). We leave the kids at the babysitter's house which is in the same community.

My SIL is a middle school teacher, 6-8th grade (11-14 yrs old). She pre-screens for us. We haven't asked for certifications but I think most if not all have taken the Red Cross Babysitting course(s).

My girls, 14, 13, and 13, use the 5,4,3, method. One kid is 5/hour the second kid is 4/hr additional and a third is 3/hr additional. Beyond three kids, they grab one or both of their sisters and team babysit, and each additional kid is 3/hr extra and they never exceed the three kids / sitter ratio.

They're all red cross certified, very professional, and I've been trying to pound a firm work ethic into them since birth. They like babysitting three kids at a time because of the money but admit it's an awful lot of work.
