          Looks similar to a cant hook or peavey - as mentioned before, a log handling device. Dimensions seem a bit off, though...

            I think it's a log handling attachment for a dozer or some sort of machinery. Not made for use by hand, cause there's no handles.

              Must be a regional thing. Around here we call those tape measures.

              And BTW, like you, I also store my tapes next to things I can't identify. It helps me find them better

                  As Scott said, it's a cant hook, sometimes called a 'log dog', though it may have been sold as a spoke dog.

                      It looks similar to a cant hook because it is a cant hook, which is similar to a peavey. This one is a custom one that is large for big logs. It seems like instead of being called a "cant hook" it should have been called a "can do" hook.
