The picture tires me out. A perfect example of why they call it "millwork". Not really that uncommon among old time woodworkers before controlled movement of electrons became popular. Probably still in use as a procedure with woodworkers lacking the financial where with all for more modern machinery. Just as interesting as the hand, foot, water operated machinery of the past.

That's called a "pit saw" and was SOP in Ye Olde Days. As I recall, the carpenter got the preferred spot up on top; his apprentice went into the pit and had to not only endure working with his hands above his head but also all the sawdust raining down on him.

It's also called a "whip saw". Here's a little more archaic setup.

Whip saw is a good name for it. I bet you felt whipped after using it.

I was gonna say, hey you in the pit, watch out for the oil buck......

Oh never mind, you stepped in it.

They used to get a lot more exercise then we do today.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Ken, you're right ... this type of setup is called a pit saw, but the type of saw itself is a whip saw. It's the same kind of saw that was used to fell large trees before the invention of the chain saw.

IINM, this is what lumberjacks also called a "misery saw." Whipped probably doesn't begin to describe what those guys felt like at the end of the day!

Those guys in the old picture didn't have to run to the gym after work to lose a few pounds. On the other hand, they DID have to worry about bursitis, shoulder dislocation, lacerations, etc., none of which were covered by workman's comp. Their women didn't look too hot. And their life expectancy was probably about 50. So take your pick.

It probably also qualifies as one of the first dust collection systems.

All this was put to rest when Tabitha Babbitt came up with the circular blade. Some say she wasn't the first, but The History Channel says she was and that's good enough for me. ;-)
