Thanks Cabinetman. I thought it was something like that. Clears up my normally foggy brain.
A frustrated BORG shopper

Anna, this made me laugh so hard I could barely type--it just perfectly captures the frustration and intense anger that can build up on bad trips to Home Depot. Borg rage.
Twistsol's theory about the pry bar and hack saw at 9 p.m. may be close to the real story.Comment

Surprising. As a matter of fact, just today I was driving past my neighborhood Lowes. They had a sidewalk sale going on, and as I got to the side of the building, I noticed three guys, two of which had the red smocks on, wrestling on the ground with a fourth guy. Pretty soon, a half-dozen cop cars were there. My understanding is that the guy grabbed merchandise off the sale tables, and hotfooted it out of there with the store employees in hot pursuit. Guess the markdowns were not good enough..."So the guy got away. surprised that he didn't get chased by some employees."
Don't blame the employees for not chasing him, two HD employees in OKC got fired for chasing a shoplifter. They caught him and held him until police arrived, but they were fired because chasing shoplifters is against store policy

Omar, as much as I'd like to say something like "there are 12 steps...take it one day at a time...had become unmanageable..." the real reason is being about three hours from the nearest one (in Maine) and almost that here in WI.Comment

My BORG is about 5 minutes away, and I've spent a considerable amount of time there. The guys working in the tools and hardware department as well as the wood section pretty much know me by now. I guess they don't get too many women ogling the power tools.
I've never had any problems finding anyone to help me in those departments because they usually come over to chat anyway. I'm kinda geeky when it comes to model numbers, etc, so I can bluff my way through a bunch of those talks. While hanging out in the power tools section, I even helped a couple of women buying tools for their husbands last Christmas.
In other parts of HD, though, specifically the garden department, I have to spend an average of 20 minutes before I find anyone to help me. And that person invariably has to go find someone to help her help me.
I don't dislike Home Depot. I just wish I have Lowes around here, too, since they seem to have all the killer sales right now.Comment

I got one HD about 5-10 min away, and another about 20 min away - the second one has a Lowes right next to it. Both are generally ok in terms of getting help, but the one by Lowes seems a bit better - in fact, I find it harder to get help at Lowes than at HD.
I don't mind self-checkout at all. Since there are usually at least four, having 1-2 shoopers who have no idea how to use the things in the line is not a big deal. If I am buying a bunch of small stuff, I'll leave the manned registers to people who get heavy things. I actually like going through the merchandise myself that one extra time to make sure I did not forget something. Now, once I tried self-checkout at a supermarket - what a nightmare!
My thoughts on the guy: probably was a meth-head getting the tools for his plan to break into a local lab for a fix. I've read these guys can 'go off' on a slightest trigger. Good thing he chose a self-checkout - or one of the clerks just might have ended up with a cracked skull.
And I totally understand the 'no shoplifter chasing' policy. If store workers hurt the guy or get hurt themselves in the process, guess who will get slammed with a lawsuit? Better lose a couple-hundred dollar tool.
One thing I wonder about: article says he caused about $10k worth of damage. Excuse me? A top of the line boutique gaming rig packed with latest goodies runs for about 5-6k. And here it looks like all he did is a single whack on the touch screen ($300-400) before running off.Comment

One station of a customized POS (point of sale) system can easily cost much more than $10,000.One thing I wonder about: article says he caused about $10k worth of damage. Excuse me? Besides, it was probably either a) the first figure that came to the assistant manager's mind or b) a legal category figure (check boxes on the police report that determine the severity of the crime).
What I want to know is whether the cost of the pry bar is incluced in the loss figure, now that it's evidence and therefore out of stock.Comment

Well, the entire machine (scanner, computer, weight checker, cash intake/dispense etc probably is in $10k range - but if smashed screen is the only damage, the repair should cost a lot less - but I agree, reporter likely wanted an impressive figure, so management provided total machine cost.Comment
