    Moonscapes

I stayed up all night waiting for the eclipse, which peaked at 2:37 AM. Why? Well, because I've never done it before.

The pictures are unedited, except for some sharpening on the first photo (taken at 8:30PM, low on the horizon) and cropping the black space around the moon.

Anyway, it really was amazing to watch, and I almost forgot to take pictures at several points. The moon turned red in the end, but my shot was hopelessly blurred. I was so tired and sleepy, it didn't even occur to me to increase the ISO in order to increase the shutter speed. Oh, well. Maybe next time.

Wow, those are great pics. I was thinking it was gonna be tonight, though I still had no plans to stay up for it. 5:00 AM comes awful early as it is.

Very nice work Anna! Did you use a tripod/telephoto/telescope?

          Thanks, guys.

I used a tripod and a shutter release cable (i.e. remote control). My lens is an 18-200mm Nikkor that I got a few days ago. Apparently, I should have a 400mm+ lens to do it "properly" unless I use a telescope.

I don't have a telescope yet, but I'm thinking of putting that on my Santa wish list. When I mentioned that over breakfast, husband pointed out I never even liked astronomy before. I think it could be fun if I could photograph some nebulae or something, though. Well, I'll even settle for Mars or Venus.

I still haven't slept. It's almost like having jet lag. Thankfully, the next total lunar eclipse is going to be earlier in the evening. I'm hoping I'll be better equipped by then.

I've seen two or three shop made wooden telescopes on the net. Why not make one?

Not sure if it'd save a lot of money, the optics might be pretty steep in price.

I saw it. Here on the east coast is started around 4AM and peaked around 6AM.
The moon never reappeared, it slipped below the horizon while it was still eclipsed. Nice pictures.

I got up a couple times to see it. The sky was perfectly clear here in Illinois shortly before the eclipse started. The next time I got up, when the eclipse would be near its peak, the moon was obscured behind clouds. Thanks to Anna, I still got to see it after all.

We missed it due to cloud cover, thanks for the pictures!
